Warm Up Safely: Winter Fire Risks Are Real in Georgia

Staying warm is important, but safety comes first.

Today’s focus: Heating & fire safety

Cold weather means more heating equipment in use , and an increased risk of house fires. In Georgia, residential structure fires result in about 7.8 deaths and 22.8 injuries per 1,000 fires, which is higher than the national average, meaning fires here tend to be more dangerous.

That’s why a few simple safety checks can make a big difference.

• Make sure heaters and vents aren’t blocked
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from furniture, curtains, blankets, and anything flammable
• Never leave space heaters unattended
• Replace batteries in smoke and CO detectors (and test them regularly)
• Have your furnace and chimney inspected if you use them

Heating equipment is one of the top causes of home fires, and simple precautions help keep your family safe.

Cold weather brings a spike in fire calls. Small checks today can prevent big problems tomorrow.
