I cringe while driving through the suburbs when I see plants pruned within an inch of their lives by untrained "landscape maintenance workers". Admittedly, most of them copy from the works of past prunners and so know only that technique. But in their defence, there are two reasons that they continue their buchery. The first is that the plant that was planted in the landscape was the wrong plant to begin with. Plant plants knowing the maturity height so that they will need minimal or no pruning for its natural life. The second is that this country was heavily influenced by the styles of 17th and 18th century european and English garden design which prized heavily sculptured shrubbery. Those fanciful gardens took scores of gardeners to achieve the desired affect and were no doubt effective. Curiously, we still seek this effect in our gardens that are planned, executed and maintained disasterously. On a modest level in a planned formal setting, perhaps, but not randomly applied to all plants.
