First time firing up the furnace this fall and caught a whiff of something burning? Totally normal, most likely. Dust settles on the heat exchanger over the summer, and when the furnace kicks back on, that dust burns off, kind of like the smell you get running the oven after months of not using it. It should fade within 20-40 minutes. But if it lingers past a full heating cycle, smells like hot plastic or electrical wiring, or smells like rotten eggs (that one means leave the house and call your gas utility), those aren't dust and are worth paying attention to. ๐Ÿ‚

We just wrapped up a heat pump and air handler install for a homeowner in Snohomish, and one of our favorite parts of the job was setting them up with Kumo Cloud. It's the app that lets you control your Mitsubishi system from your phone, no matter where you are. You can adjust the temperature before you get home, set a schedule for different times of day, and get a notification if the system ever loses power or wifi. If you already have a Mitsubishi ductless or ducted system, it's worth asking whether Kumo Cloud is set up on it. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

We just wrapped a heat pump install where the outdoor unit tucked perfectly into a narrow side-yard notch between the house and the fence. Homeowners often assume they need a big open space for a heat pump, but as long as there's clearance around the sides and top for airflow, plus enough room for a technician to service it later, a tight spot can work great. It's also a nice bonus for keeping the unit out of view from the main yard or patio. If you're planning an install and worried you don't have the space, it's worth having someone walk the property with you before ruling it out.

Cascadia Comfort is now an official PSE Trade Ally. Here's why that matters: PSE now requires heat pump installations to be done by an approved Trade Ally in order for customers to qualify for their rebates, and one of those is a $1,500 rebate for eligible electric resistance to heat pump conversions. If you've been considering a heat pump upgrade, this is good timing, since it means the rebate process is now built right into the project instead of something you have to chase down separately. ๐Ÿ™‚

We dropped an impact driver into a wall cavity on a job last week. It happens, and when it does, you have two choices: hide it or own it. We told the customer right away, let them know any drywall damage would be covered and paint matched, and then got to work building a makeshift tool on the spot to fish it out. We got it back, the wall was fine, and honestly the customer got a kick out of watching us problem-solve. Things go wrong on job sites. What matters is what you do next. ๐Ÿ”ง

If you're looking at mini-splits, one of the first decisions is whether to go with a wall-mounted unit or a cassette. Wall-mounted units are the most common, they install on an upper section of the wall, are easier to service, and generally cost less. Cassette mini-splits sit flush in the ceiling and push air in four directions at once, making them a better fit for open floor plans or spaces where a wall unit would feel out of place. The cassette looks cleaner and distributes air more evenly across larger rooms, but the installation is more involved. Neither is universally better. It comes down to your room layout, ceiling type, and how visible you want the unit to be.

If you're adding an ADU to your property, one of the first questions that comes up is how to heat and cool it. Most ADUs, especially detached ones or garage conversions, aren't built with ductwork, and adding it isn't as simple as running a line from the main house. You'd be looking at a system that wasn't sized for the extra square footage, plus the cost of running ducts through a finished space. A mini-split solves this cleanly. One outdoor unit, one (or a few) wall-mounted indoor heads, and the ADU has its own independent heating and cooling that the tenant or family member controls themselves. No shared thermostat, no oversized system struggling to keep up. ๐Ÿ

That outdoor unit was doing its best, but it was working a lot harder than it needed to. This is from a routine maintenance visit on a 4-head mini-split system, and what you're looking at on the left is a coil and cabinet caked with dirt, debris, and a season's worth of buildup. A dirty outdoor unit can't transfer heat efficiently, which means the system runs longer, works harder, and costs more to operate. A good cleaning and tune-up gets it back to running the way it was designed to. This one cleaned up nicely. ๐Ÿงน

A restaurant kitchen at 80 degrees is a tough place to work. We got a call from a local Denny's recently because their kitchen had lost cooling and temps were climbing fast. Turned out to be a commercial rooftop package unit (an all-in-one heating and cooling system that sits on top of the building) that needed attention. We got it sorted and the kitchen back to a workable temperature. Commercial systems are a different animal than residential, but the core lesson is the same: when cooling fails in a space where people are working or food is being handled, every hour matters. ๐Ÿ”ง

If your home runs on a gas furnace, you're not stuck with it forever. Ductless mini-split heat pumps (like the Mitsubishi unit we're installing here) heat and cool your home using electricity, with no combustion involved. They work in both directions, which means one system handles your heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. For Seattle-area homes without existing ductwork, they're often the cleanest path to full electrification. Most installs are one or two days, and Washington state incentives can meaningfully offset the cost depending on your situation. ๐Ÿ”Œ
