A dark exterior is unforgiving - every missed step shows. A homeowner in Bellevue wanted a moody, modern color on a waterfront home. We love that look AND we respect it, because deep tones expose everything: lap lines, thin spots, sloppy cut-ins.

There's nowhere to hide, so the only way to do it is the slow way. That means a thorough wash, careful masking, and priming where it's needed. The coats will be nice and even, so that the color reads rich and consistent, with clean lines where the dark siding meets the white trim. That contrast is the highlight. And when the house sits on the water, that finish isn't just for looks. It's also a protective layer standing between the house and the weather.

Painting is where Tenhulzen started 25 years ago, and it's still where our crews are sharpest.

Some backyards get a patio set. This one got a room.

A homeowner in Snohomish wanted outdoor space they could actually use past Labor Day, so we built a covered outdoor living structure to match. Heavy timber post-and-beam framing, a tongue-and-groove wood ceiling with skylights to keep it bright, and a full setup underneath: outdoor kitchen, linear gas fireplace, a TV, and overhead heaters for the nights it turns cold. New French doors tie it right back to the house, and a large paver patio finishes it off.

The stonework, siding, trim, and gutters were all blended into the existing home so it reads like it was always there, not bolted on.

That's the difference between a cover and a room you'll live in nine months out of the year.

A deck is only as good as the structure under it.

A homeowner in Everett had an elevated deck that had earned its keep and then some. Great spot, real view, but the years were showing. We brought it back: solid posts and beams, a clean glass railing so nothing gets between you and the view, and stone column wraps that make the whole thing look built to stay.

The part you don't see is where the work lives. On an elevated deck, the connections and the coating are what decide whether it's solid in ten years or a problem in three. So that's where our time went. Sound structure first, then a finish that holds up to Puget Sound weather.

A deck like this isn't a teardown. It's a repair done right, so a family gets their favorite part of the house back.

For almost five months, Michele washed dishes in a bathtub during their own kitchen remodel. That's not a story we hide from. It's the reason we understand exactly what we're asking of you during a project.

A covered patio only feels finished once the wood does.

A homeowner in Edmonds had a new covered patio built and brought us in for the part that helps it stand up to the Pacific Northwest climate: the paint and stain. It was a pretty straightforward scope: seal the bare cedar beams, posts, and wraps, prime the raw wood, recoat the trim, and touch up the siding. The reason it lasts isn't just the product; it's the sequence. Wash, mask, prime bare wood, two coats, clean lines... all are vital.

Painting is where Tenhulzen began 25 years ago, and we still run every exterior with the same discipline. It's the difference between a patio that looks good on install day and one that still looks good a decade in.

Most contractors won't tell you about the rooms where they sit and get critiqued by their peers, but we will. Twice a year, Scott Tenhulzen meets for three days with owner-operators from some of the top remodeling firms in the country. Employee interviews. Hard feedback. Specific, measurable commitments to deliver before the next meeting.

Why does that matter to a homeowner? Because the contractors who invest in being challenged are the ones building the systems behind your project. The results are cleaner sites, clearer communication, and tighter schedules.

What backs it up: ongoing training with the manufacturers we trust, and new products and methods tested on our own homes before they ever reach yours.

When other painters turned the Ice family away, we said yes.

A 20-year-old millwork finish nobody believed could be brought back. But with the right prep, the right method, and a team that wouldn't settle for close enough, the result was better than new construction.

Swipe to see how we did it and what the Ice family had to say about the work.

Most retirement plans cover everything except the house. 🏡

This month, the investment and retirement planning team at McIlrath | Eck invited Scott to co-author a piece for their client newsletter on something we think about a lot: planning your home for the chapter ahead - before you actually need to.

The short version 👇
âś… Proactive remodels = full runway, your choice of materials, accessibility that looks like good design
⚠️ Emergency retrofits = rushed, expensive, rarely what anyone hoped for

Scott’s CAPS certification means we plan these projects thinking about how a space will work for someone navigating it 20 years from now, not just how it looks on day one. 🛠️

If your home hasn’t made it onto the retirement planning agenda yet, that’s the conversation to have. Free consultations - link in bio.
