9 weeks of summertime learning in our library garden wrapped up today with our garden tasting party! Big shout out to all the families who attended and the PLUC and Ms Mary !
We tasted our library grown cucumbers, squash, beans, okra, and tomatoes too! We had fun dino themed goodies too!!
We used our golden zucchini harvest to make chocolate zucchini chocolate chip muffins!! The best! Some.of us made mint lemonade and ms kim made lavender lemonade with the lavender 💜 in garden! Yummy! We named our dino hunting scarecrow and put him up in garden to watch over it while we are at school soon! We went on our end of summer garden walk to rain garden in search of monarch caterpillars on the milkw**d ! Best tip is to search for caterpillar p**p on leaves and you usually can find the caterpillars but we didn't find any munching ! But we found some other pollinating insects! We learned about how the rain garden at library works and some of the native plants in bloom now! Joe Pye w**d is looking great now! The false indigo Baptisia sp. has made seed pods now!

Those pesky squash bugs were back at it again this week, so before we watered our garden beds, we grabbed that duct tape to clean out as many eggs as we could find.

Tons of things are growing and were harvested today. Squash, peppers, a few cherry tomatoes.. those big ones just aren't ripening up yet! Click below to find out about tomatoes and their stages of ripening! https://extension.psu.edu/is-this-tomato-ready-to-harvest

The caterpillars are still hanging out on the dill, no sign of them changing into their chrysalis yet.

Ms Kim has jury duty this week and thankful for MGs who led the way with ms Mary! Mary showed the kids some birds nests she found at her farm. Robins, Orioles, Starlings... they all make different sizes and styles of nests. Some even use trash they find, and we talked about being stewards of our gardens and how to help birds in our garden! One nest was made with the fur from Ms Mary's donkey!!
We used our magnifying glasses to inspect our pollinator garden up close and see 🦋 and bees at work!
We finished up with a fun bug seek and find game!

Next week we wrap things up with our garden party and scarecrow making! Come taste our garden and name the scarecrow!

Our Garden is filled with produce today! Squash, snack size Peppers, cucumbers, edamame, tomatoes, beans and our mystery plant has been identified and has put on okra!!
Butterflies and moths are benefiting from our garden ! Swallowtail caterpillars found our mammoth dill we planted just for it and reseeds every year!
Our efforts to pick all squash bug eggs was not as successful as we thought and had loads of nymphs today! We used water hose to spray them down but have feeling they will be back!
We had fun scraping our pretend spotted lantern fly playdoh egg masses from our apple tree to practice spotting them and scraping them into ziplock bags with alcohol or soapy water. We wont see egg masses yet but found our black spotted nymphs have moved on to the later instar stage now and are red white and black ! So we learned the lanternfly stomp!!

Lots of work today for kiddos in Garden! On the hunt for squash bug eggs under our squash leaves! Copper eggs and even nymphs were found today and we all used tape to stick them and remove them ! We hunted japanese beetles too and found some spotted lantern fly nymphs too ! Ziploc bag and alcohol did the trick! We had fun making cyanotypes in the garden with our bounty and flowers using sunshine to create with and we played the butterfly quest game as they dried !! Finding the correct plants for each butterfly to lay eggs on for their caterpillars to munch! We matched them all and then found out the butterfly bush had no matching butterfly ! Butterfly bush is invasive in Pennsylvania taking up space from native plants that caterpillars and butterflies use and doesnt provide any native caterpillars with food!

Exploring our garden today finding golden zuchinni ready to eat! Peppers in rainbow colors to snack on right from the garden ! Some little gardeners took bites and others just like to do the picking!Edamame fuzzy pods ready to peel open but we decided to let them get a little bigger ! ! Cucumbers 🥒 ripening and green tomatoes that we learned will turn red when they are ready to eat!

We rescued our squash plants from a squash boring moth before it laid eggs we hope ! This moth was cool to observe and learn how they lay their eggs and hatch into a wiggly larva that will bore into our beautiful squash plants causing them to wilt and die since they cant get any water ! We found a load of japanese beetles eating leaves too in our garden!

We made beautiful garden necklaces today as we explored the pollinator garden filled with bee balm, milkw**d and queen anns lace and more! Busy little gardeners today!
