Two-and-a-half-inch hail fell on Charlottesville and Albemarle County on August 14th. That's baseball-sized.

Most homeowners check their car for dents after a storm like that. Almost nobody checks their roof — and hail damage is easy to miss from the ground.

Here's what to actually look for:

Dark, bruised spots on shingles where granules have been knocked loose. Soft or dented spots on gutters, vents, and flashing (metal shows hail impact faster than shingles do). Granule buildup collecting in your downspouts. Cracked or split shingles, especially on the side of the roof that faced the storm.

Hail damage doesn't always mean water is coming in today. But a bruised shingle loses its protective granules, and that spot wears down fast — especially heading into fall and winter.
