Look at what was holding this tree up: a flat plate of soil, turf, and roots, not a post going straight down. When strong wind and wet ground work together, that plate can lift out in one piece.

The warning signs usually show at the base first. Soil heaved on one side, a trunk that leans more than it used to, or new cracks in the ground near the roots. After a heavy rain, take a quick look at the bases of your biggest trees. If something looks different, we can inspect it and tell you what we see.

Look at where this trunk split. The stems tore apart at the union, and the wood inside is dark and crumbly, not clean and pale.

That is the part to check on your own trees this fall, and you can do it from the ground. Stand back and look at every spot where a trunk forks into two stems of similar size. Check for a crack in the seam, bark pinched tight between the stems, or dark staining and holes in the fork.

Take a photo of each one and note the date, so you can tell next month whether anything changed.

A tree removal is not finished when the trunk is on the ground.

That tracked loader with the grapple is how we move felled wood off a driveway without dragging it across the lawn. The machine carries the load, so the crew is not hauling heavy sections by hand, and the lawn and the driveway take far less of a beating.

A good removal is planned before the first cut: where the wood will land, what it can reach, and how it comes out of the yard. The branches in front of the machine get cleared too, down to the last twig.

The most common trimming mistake we see: cutting a big limb from a ladder.

It seems reasonable. The limb is only a few feet over your head and the saw is already in your hand. But a limb that size does not fall where you plan, and you are standing on the one thing that cannot get out of the way.

That is why our crew works from a lift, with a person in the basket so the cut is made right at the limb. If the branch is above your head, it is a job for a pro.

You can read a pruning job in the cuts.

Here a climber works a tall conifer on ropes, with fresh cuts visible on the stems around him. Good pruning has a reason behind every cut. A branch comes off back at the place where it joins another, not as a stub left sticking out.

Stubs and flush scalps are the signs of a rushed job. They give decay a way into the wood, and they rarely close over.

Before anyone cuts your trees, ask where each cut will be made and why.

Before an arborist visits, walk your own trees and write down what you have noticed. It takes ten minutes, and it is all done from the ground.

Look for a limb that is newly dead, a lean that was not there last year, mushrooms at the base, or soil that has heaved. Take a few phone photos of each one and note when you first saw it.

That list helps far more than "the big oak looks sick." It tells us what changed, and it keeps the visit focused on your tree instead of a generic checklist.

A hedge job is not finished when the green is gone from the top. It is finished when the shape is right.

This row of tall evergreens had grown into one heavy wall. The goal was not to chop it flat. We reduced each crown, rounded it, and separated it from its neighbor, so light and air reach the sides and you can see the trunks and fence underneath.

Shaping with a reason takes more time than a quick shear. It also leaves a screen that holds its form and does not turn brown in the middle.

"I'll look at the trees once the leaves are down." It sounds sensible, and a bare crown really is easier to read.

The catch is the weeks in between. A limb that cracked in a summer storm can hang on through October and let go in the first wet November wind, usually over a roof, a driveway, or a car.

You do not need a ladder. Stand back and look for brown leaves still clinging to one branch, a new lean, or a limb hanging lower than it did in June. Take a photo and compare it after the next storm.

A tree with three trunks is not three trees. It is one tree sharing one root system.

Multi-stem ornamentals like the one in this yard look beautiful, but the stems compete for light and space as they grow. Where they cross, rub, or crowd each other, bark gets wounded and weight builds up at the ends. Shaping should open the canopy and keep each stem's natural lean, not cut it all back.

That is the difference between ornamental shaping and just trimming. The goal is a clean structure that still looks like the tree it is.

Can you still see the bark on your trees? In this yard, vines have climbed two tall trees to the very top, and from the ground you can no longer tell where the tree ends and the vine begins.

That is the problem. Vines hide the trunk, add weight to the crown, and cover the cracks, cavities, and dead limbs we look for when we check a tree's health. Fall is a good time to stand back and ask whether each trunk is still visible.

If it is not, leave the climbing and cutting to a pro. Questions about a tree in your yard? Give us a call at (732) 291-4444.
