TRUE OR FALSE:
This smoke alarm has been protecting this home longer than the owner of Parklight Electric has been doing electrical work.

Answer: FALSE!

This smoke alarm was manufactured in July 2004. Parklight’s owner started in the electrical trade in 2003, so believe it or not, he’s got seniority on this one.

At 22 years old, though, this smoke alarm is more than twice its recommended 10 year lifespan.

Go check the date on yours. You might be surprised what you find.

This one is a good example of why water and electrical equipment don’t mix.

We received a call from a customer who had water pouring into her electrical panel. Once we opened it up, the damage was pretty clear. Years of moisture had caused significant corrosion at the main connections and throughout the equipment.

At this point, there’s no “cleaning it up” or replacing a breaker or two. The panel and damaged service equipment needed to be completely replaced.

If you ever notice water around your electrical panel, rust or corrosion inside the equipment, or signs of moisture coming down your service cable, don’t ignore it. Water intrusion can damage connections you can’t see and create a serious electrical hazard.

Thankfully, this customer called before it got any worse.

We’re seeing more light fixtures purchased from Amazon and other online marketplaces that do not have a recognized safety listing.

So what does that mean?

You’ve probably seen UL or ETL on electrical products. These marks indicate that the product has been tested by a recognized testing laboratory to verify that it meets applicable U.S. safety standards.

That testing looks at things like wiring, insulation, grounding, heat resistance, construction and potential fire or shock hazards.

A fixture can look great, have thousands of positive reviews and still not be properly listed for installation.

The National Electrical Code requires certain electrical equipment to be listed, labeled or approved, and inspectors can reject equipment that does not meet those requirements.

For that reason, Parklight Electric will not install light fixtures or other electrical equipment that do not have an acceptable listing or approval.

Buying fixtures online? Check for a legitimate UL, ETL or other recognized testing laboratory mark before you order.

Cheap fixtures can get expensive when your electrician can’t install them.

Unlike old incandescent bulbs, LEDs don't simply heat up a filament until it burns out. Inside every LED bulb is a small electronic driver that converts the electricity coming from your home into something the LEDs can use.

In fact, the LEDs themselves can last for tens of thousands of hours. It's usually the electronics inside the bulb that fail first, causing flickering, dimming, or a bulb that stops working altogether.

So the next time an LED bulb goes bad, it probably didn't "burn out" at all.

Have a flickering light in your home? Most people think I'm crazy when the first thing I ask is if they've tried replacing the bulb. It sounds too simple, but it fixes the problem more often than you'd think!

Delaware’s getting hammered with thunderstorms today.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is, “I have surge protectors on my power strips, so I’m covered.”
