Mouldings have a place in both classical and modern architecture.

Designed in 1935, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater carries our study of architectural detail into twentieth-century modern architecture. Its sweeping terraces and stone walls are instantly recognizable, while its integrated cabinetry, shelving, and geometric details reward a closer look.

These drawings and photographs trace that attention from the building’s overall form to its smallest edges. Notice how the horizontal lines of the woodwork echo the terraces outside, connecting furnishings and architecture through a shared sense of proportion.

A wash of sunshine, a measure of geometry, and unmistakably Miami Beach.

These four hotels reveal the range within Art Deco: soaring towers, sculpted ornament, calibrated lines, and color that sets each architectural detail in relief.

1 · Royal Palm
Framed by broad green leaves, yellow vertical fins climb toward a blue, cloud streaked sky, while projecting balconies compose an arresting interplay of light and shadow. Its history includes a notable reconstruction: the original 1939 hotel was demolished after structural deterioration, and its historic portion was then rebuilt from the original plans.

2 · Leslie
Albert Anis’s 1937 design pairs sunny yellow accents with a stepped roofline and bold geometric forms. Fluted yellow bands and slender stripes stand out against creamy white walls, with a palm in the foreground. Projecting window ledges, known as “eyebrows,” cast shade while lending the façade its horizontal emphasis.

3 · National
Designed by Roy France, the National balances an assertive central tower against a symmetrical façade. Contrasting vertical accents, here red and cream striped panels climbing the center, heighten its sense of ascent, while shallow ledges above the windows add depth. Sand colored walls glow against the sky, framed by palms.

4 · Savoy
Designed by Victor Hugo Nellenbogen in 1935, the Savoy rewards a longer look. At dusk, its white façade glows against a deep blue sky, with warm amber light behind the windows. A decorative relief panel crowns the entrance axis, where vertical grooves and a rounded canopy with a gleaming metallic edge lend texture and movement.

A crown build-up combines several moulding profiles into one architectural composition where wall meets ceiling. Crown moulding, flat boards, and smaller trim pieces work together to create a cornice with greater height, projection, and detail.

Profiles commonly used as baseboard or door casing can also become part of a crown build-up. Positioned beneath or behind the crown, they extend the composition and introduce additional contours and shadow lines.

Each piece contributes to the overall design: curves soften transitions, flat surfaces separate decorative elements, and projecting edges create depth. The proportions should complement the room’s ceiling height, dimensions, and surrounding trim.

A winged sun above the doorway. Lotus blossoms at the capitals. Deep blue, russet, and gold animating walls and ceilings.

Egyptian Revival brings the architectural language of ancient Egypt into unexpected settings. Across Europe and America, architects reinterpreted its monumental gateways, tapering walls, and richly patterned ornament in buildings ranging from civic landmarks to theatrical interiors.

Look closely at the mouldings: the broad, concave sweep of a cavetto cornice gives a roofline or doorway its distinctive flared silhouette. Alongside columns inspired by lotus and papyrus, these forms recall the temples and plant life of the Nile.

Victorian interiors derive much of their character from the depth and variety of their mouldings. Broad curves, narrow beads, and recessed surfaces generate distinct lines of light and shadow, lending definition to doorways, windows, and the juncture of wall and ceiling.

The entrance hall at Kingscote in Newport, Rhode Island, illustrates the adaptation of Gothic forms to domestic interiors. Pointed arches rest on slender, faceted columns, while related profiles recur in the paneled door and the tracery of the wainscoting. The coffered ceiling and substantial casings complete a composition unified by the repetition of moulded details.

DESIGNING WITH MOULDINGS

Mouldings are used to express structural and formal transitions. Just as in designing the basic structure and form of a building or room, restraint, order, and clarity of expression should inform the design and the placement of mouldings.

The following discusses an important concept for successful composition and design.

HARMONIZE PROPORTION AND SCALE

Proportioning systems are derived from the relationships between numbers and are expressed as fractions or ratios. These ratios exist all around us in musical scales, the Classical Architectural Orders, the Forms of Nature, and in Numbering Systems.

The illustration shows how the overall composition of the height and width of a room and the subdivision of the spaces on its walls are all related to the various parts. The cornice, the profile of the architrave moulding, and the division of the parts of dado or wainscot, all are related to the wall as a whole. Likewise, the length of a room, the relationship of one room to another, and of the parts of a building to a whole are related to each other proportionately. The more consistent and balanced the proportions and scale, the more appealing and harmonious on both an immediate and subliminal level.

Built in 1826, the Jonathan Hale House stands at the heart of Hale Farm & Village of Summit County, within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park area, roughly between Cleveland and Akron. These images bring together documentation from the Historic American Buildings Survey with architectural drawings prepared by our team at Mouldings One, revealing the precise millwork that gives this restrained Federal-style house its character.

The house is especially meaningful to us as we study it for inclusion in our forthcoming book, which is based on The Homes of the Western Reserve of Ohio. We are traveling throughout the region to photograph each house and to write both its historical record and an account of what remains today. Careful documentation is essential to architectural preservation because it allows the significant history of a building to remain accessible long into the future.

Many of the intricacies behind fine moulding work are not widely known and often become nearly invisible once a project is complete. An existing moulding profile, for example, can be specially shaped to follow the curve of an arched opening.

Straight wood casing forms the vertical sections, while a matching radius head continues the profile across the arch. When a design includes a backband, the curved portion can also be produced to preserve that detail. Curved walls may instead call for flexible moulding, depending on the profile, radius, finish, and needs of the project.
