Ever wonder what gives your elevator its personality? It all lives in one room.
This is the elevator’s machine room. Those big green wheels are called sheaves, and thick steel ropes wrap around them like string around a spinning top.
Here’s the cool part: an elevator works a lot like a giant seesaw.
On one end is the elevator car you ride in. On the other end, hidden inside the hoistway, is a heavy counterweight. When the elevator goes up, the counterweight comes down. When the elevator goes down, the counterweight goes up.
Because they balance each other, the motor doesn’t have to work nearly as hard.
A smooth, quiet ride usually means everything is working exactly as it should.
A jerky, noisy, or slow elevator? That’s often a sign something in this room needs attention.
The personality of your elevator is created right here—long before anyone presses a button.
Good engineering does its job so well you never think about it.
