Fabbrica Marmi e Graniti launches five marble-effect surface tiles.
Italian brand Fabbrica Marmi e Graniti (FMG) has launched five marble-look tiles that are designed for covering interior surfaces and furnishings.

The tiles form part of FMG's MaxFine range of large-format porcelain stoneware that is designed for both commercial and domestic interiors.

Among the new designs are the Aosta Green Marble, Connemarble Irish and Verde Persia tiles, which each emulate a different type of natural green marble.

The final two styles, called Calacatta Grey and Statuario Delicato, offer a more classic, white-marble finish.

New AILA President elected.
Claire Martin has been elected as President of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), with Peta-Maree Ashford and Chris Tidswell re-elected to the respective positions of Vice-President and Company Secretary.

President Claire Martin said “I am honoured to have been re-elected to the board by AILA members, alongside incumbent Katharina Nieberler-Walker and new Director Jasmine Ong, and to have the support of my fellow Directors for the role of President. The three things that I would like to define my presidency, and our term as a board, are: collaboration, communication, and representation to ensure strong corporate governance and the prioritisation and implementation of AILA’s renewed strategic plan.”

The board will shortly be meeting to finalise revisions to the AILA Strategic Plan and will set a meeting schedule for 2020-21 to continue to ensure good governance and organisational improvements.

The board is very keen to pursue a distributed leadership model to inform AILA policy and strategic direction.

Climate change and biodiversity loss are the twin global challenges of our time, and the COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of the relationship between climate, people, and nature. I firmly believe in strength in numbers. By working across Australia, regionally and globally with our executives, committees and membership we will increase our capacity to implement change, raising the profile of landscape architects across all sectors.

Claire Martin – Newly Elected President of AILA
The board will continue to meet remotely while COVID-19 restrictions remain in place.

The draft NSW Public Spaces Charter is a resource to support the planning, design, management and activation of public spaces in NSW. The draft Evaluation Tool will help government, councils, industry and communities identify how to deliver more and better quality green, open and public space.

The Great Public Spaces Toolkit is a collection of free resources to support local government, government agencies, industry and the community. Shifting from suppression to prevention.
As we see the images of California wildfires appear on the news for another year and the call has gone out to various countries to send help and with the ‘Black Summer’ Australian bushfires still in our memories, it raises many questions for citizens and governments on how to manage fire.

As we see the impacts of climate change increasing and consistently seeing wildfires in countries across the world, we have to ask when will governments move from spending billions on suppression and rebuilding communities and shift to better landscape management that reduces the possibility for fires. There is a need for governments to come together and realise that the continuous cycle of fire fighting and endless calls to firefighters to fight bushfires (wildfires) across the world is not sustainable.

Recently, the Australian state government of New South Wales accepted the recommendations of ‘Black Summer’ bushfire inquiry[1] and the state of Victoria committed millions of dollars to recovery and rebuilding of the hundreds of communities that were impacted by the fires.[2] Both of these governments have used suppression as a key tool in managing fire. However, we have to ask when will they realise that suppression is not the answer, and alternatives must be sort.

Fire has been apart of earth’s climate for over 350-400 million years[3], and cultural burning has been used by indigenous people in various parts of the world to manage the land. Governments should seek to utilise indigenous and local knowledge to create plans for preventative land management and implement cultural burning (cool burning) programs. There needs to be a shift from fire suppression to prevention with greater investment in training along with education programs that recognise that we co-exist with fire.

As landscape architects and designers, we need to play a role in land management and educate clients about the role of fire when working areas that have biodomes that require fire management. When we create master plans for regional parks, towns and cities, parks, tourism developments and other developments, we need to be mindful of the role of fire when managing the land. As a profession, we should seek to gain a greater understanding of the role of fire in ecological health and biodiversity.

The New Architecture: Sky Parks, Tidal Pools and ‘Solar Carving’
Can buildings be more porous, more open to the vitality of the surrounding city? As with the creation of the great urban parks of the 19th century, designers today are rebalancing the relationship between architecture and nature, with the goal of increasing the quality of life, especially in urban settings.

Sometimes this means erasing boundaries between indoors and outdoors, buildings and environment. Instead of the man-made and the organic jockeying for position or dominance, they are sharing each other’s territory. And occasionally they seamlessly fuse, each transforming the other. This, after all, is the age of the rooftop farm and the outdoor conference room.

Governors Island unveils Climate Solutions Center.
The Trust for Governors Island recently unveiled plans to develop the Climate Solutions Center, leveraging Governors Island’s unique environment and waterfront location as a public living laboratory. The proposed center will provide a central convening spot for researchers, advocates, innovators and students from around the globe focused on climate change solutions, while offering meaningful opportunities for public engagement, bringing hands-on education, programming and advocacy initiatives around climate and environmental issues directly to New Yorkers. The Trust’s proposal comes as the ongoing pandemic has underscored the need for coordinated, cross-sector planning that centers equity around the world’s most urgent issues.

Wittman Estes Designs Sunken Courtyard in a Sun Soaked Backyard.
Wittman Estes recently transformed a steep hillside landscape into a lush social garden. Situated on a lot with over 40 feet of grade change, Laurelhurst Hillside Garden weaves together a series of vibrant new gardens and outdoor living spaces for an active young couple's home. Organized around a series of concrete and steel terraces, the landscape design encourages guests to enjoy intimate garden experiences and outward views to the neighborhood and Lake Washington.

The main entrance to the house sits over 20 above the street and was cut off from view, creating a challenge for guests as well as the owners. The backyard, with existing mature Japanese maple trees and occasional views to Lake Washington, rose steeply from the back deck and was not readily accessible from the home. The Roddens asked that their landscape be designed in a way that would allow a more gracious connection between the house and outdoor spaces so they could be outside and enjoy the full extent of their property.

The couple and their two daughters wanted a way to be outdoors and socialize, cook, and relax with friends and family. Wittman Estes imagined a series of interconnected spaces for both the front and back yards, and envisioned a terraced landscape with a variety of open spaces woven into lush plantings. In the front, a new custom mailbox and house number demarcates the entrance and starts at the street to create a more gracious entry for guests to climb the hillside and enjoy the lush plantings and views along the path to the front door. Wide landings paved with custom pre-cast pavers are linked by steel and concrete steps, and bracketed by 3' tall carbon steel planters with billowing grasses.
