But don't automatically assume an EV charger means you need to replace your electrical service.

Before making that recommendation, we want to know:

🔎 What electrical loads already exist?
🔎 What size charger are you considering?
🔎 How much charging capacity do you actually need?

Sometimes there's capacity available.

WHAT IS THAT BIG DISCONNECT OUTSIDE MY HOUSE?

If you've seen a large electrical disconnect near the meter and wondered what it does, you're not alone.

A main service disconnect provides a means to disconnect power to the home's electrical system from a readily accessible location.

That can be extremely important when power needs to be shut down quickly.

Modern electrical requirements have changed how services are designed, and an exterior emergency disconnect may become part of the conversation when older service equipment is replaced or upgraded. This upgrade may also be a great time to get setup for a whole home generator.

This is also why a service upgrade isn't simply about getting “more amps.”

Look outside.

Some homes receive power through an overhead electrical service, while others are supplied underground.

With an overhead service, you'll typically see utility conductors connecting to service equipment on the home.

With an underground service, much of that connection is hidden below ground.

The type of service matters when planning a replacement or capacity upgrade because the equipment, installation requirements and utility coordination can be different.

One of the most common questions we hear is:

“Should I upgrade my home to 200-amp service?”

The answer isn't automatically yes.

Today's homes can have significant electrical demands from:

⚡ Electric ranges and ovens
⚡ EV chargers
⚡ Pools and outdoor living spaces

Your electrical panel is only one part of the system.
