🏡 Project Spotlight: A Fresh Start in Melbourne

A new home deserves a roof you can feel good about from day one.

We recently completed a full asphalt shingle roof replacement in Melbourne for a homeowner and his family who are relocating to Florida from out of state.

There wasn't a complicated story behind this one—just an aging roof that needed to be replaced and a family getting ready for a new chapter here in Brevard County.

We removed the existing roofing and installed a new asphalt shingle roof, giving the homeowners one less thing to worry about as they settle into their new home.

Case File: The Standing Water Situation

📍 Viera, FL

We were called to a local business in Viera for a roof leak. In fact, we ended up coming back a second time when another area developed a similar problem.

The roof is a low-slope, parapet-walled system with drainage directed toward several different areas. The main issue we found during the first visit was standing water.

An AC drainpipe had become disconnected and was continuously dumping water onto a single area of the roof, so it never had time to dry. Over time, that constant moisture caused damage to the coating and roofing materials underneath.

But that wasn't the only problem.

We also found several areas where the peel-and-stick granulated cap sheet had lost adhesion along the parapet walls, leaving gaps where water could get underneath. There was another small failure near an AC curb where a seam had separated and created a tear in the coating.

We addressed the problems by:

-Reconnecting and securing the AC drainpipe
-Removing standing water from the affected areas
-Removing as much compromised coating as possible
-Allowing the underlying materials to dry
-Repairing gaps and separated material with heat welding and roofing cement
-Applying new silicone coating over the repaired areas

Later, the owner called us back about another area near a scupper drain that was experiencing a similar issue. We gave that area the same treatment and also replaced some old flashing over the building's shingle section.

The takeaway:

Standing water can cause problems that go far beyond the water you can see.

In this case, it contributed to deterioration of the roofing materials and exposed weaknesses in several areas of the roof system.

A good roof repair starts with figuring out why the water is getting there in the first place.

Case File: The Dead Valley Breach

📍 Melbourne, FL

This Melbourne home had a dead valley that had been allowing water to make its way into a particularly vulnerable area at the corner of the second story.

The water had actually created a small hole through the stucco! At some point, a previous repair had attempted to address the problem with silicone coating—but the water eventually worked its way through that repair as well.

🕵️ The Investigation

Rather than adding another layer of sealant over the existing repair, we went back to the source. We removed the existing:

Shingles
Underlayment
Flashing
Failed sealant

🛠️ The Solution

We installed new flashing to cover the opening and protect the surrounding area, followed by a modified bitumen roofing system designed to properly address the dead valley.

We then tied the modified bitumen into the existing shingle system and used modified roofing cement along the bottom edge.

📖 The Lesson

Sometimes the repair isn't another layer.

When water keeps finding its way through a repair, it's time to investigate why.

⛈️ Thunderstorms & Your Roof

Florida thunderstorms can go from sunny skies to heavy rain and strong winds in a matter of minutes. With increased storm activity expected across Brevard County this week, it's a good time to think about what those storms can do to your roof.

Your roof doesn't have to suffer obvious storm damage for a problem to develop.

⛈️ Gusty winds can lift or loosen shingles, damage flashing, and expose vulnerable areas.

🌧️ Heavy downpours can quickly expose drainage problems like clogged gutters or areas where water isn't shedding properly.

💨 Wind-driven rain can find its way through small gaps around flashing, vents, skylights, and other roof penetrations.

⚡ Lightning and nearby storms can also bring falling branches and debris that damage roofing and other components.

What should you do after a strong storm?

Take a quick look from the ground for:

✔️ Missing or lifted shingles
✔️ Damaged flashing
✔️ Debris or fallen branches
✔️ Sagging gutters or downspouts
✔️ Damaged soffit or fascia
✔️ Anything that looks different from before the storm

Don't climb onto the roof to inspect it yourself. If something looks questionable, have a professional take a closer look.

And remember: not all storm damage is obvious from the ground.

If you've had a particularly strong storm in your area and you're concerned about your roof, it's better to catch a small problem before it becomes a leak.

With extreme heat affecting Brevard County this week, knowing the warning signs of heat illness is important—especially for people working outside.

🟠 HEAT EXHAUSTION

Watch for symptoms such as:

• Dizziness
• Heavy sweating
• Nausea
• Weakness
• Thirst

Move to a cooler area, loosen clothing, sip cool water, and stop physical activity. Seek medical attention if symptoms don't improve.

🔴 HEAT STROKE

Heat stroke is a medical emergency!

Warning signs can include:

• Confusion
• Severe dizziness
• Loss of consciousness

Call 911 immediately. Move the person to a cooler area, loosen clothing, and begin cooling them with water or ice while waiting for emergency medical help.

One important thing to remember:

Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke.

If you're working outside in this heat, pay attention to your body—and keep an eye on the people working alongside you.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay informed.
