Our moisture meter maxed out at 100 on the drywall in this Crown Point basement.

That’s about as wet as a wall gets.

A copper water line had broken, and by the time our team at RestoPros of Northwest Indiana got there, water had spread through the family room, a bedroom, an office, the bathroom, a closet, the hallway, and the utility room.

The stair carpet was soaked too.

We treated it as contaminated water, set up containment, and had dehumidifiers running the same day.

The wet carpet and pad, baseboards, paneling, lower drywall, and the bathroom shower all came out.

Most folks around here assume a flooded basement is automatically covered by their homeowners policy. A lot of the time, it isn't. 💧

Standard policies often exclude water that backs up through a sump pump or a drain.

That coverage usually comes from a separate rider you have to add on purpose. Plenty of people learn this the hard way, after a denied claim.

The fix is one phone call: ask your insurance agent if you have sump pump and water backup coverage. If you don't, it's usually cheap to add.
