What is under your commercial kitchen's floor?

Sometimes keeping a building operating means tacking the infrastructure that nobody ever sees. Here is a look at a commercial kitchen drainage project we at American Mechanical KC worked on at a local childcare facility in the Kansas City area.
These pictures show just some of the challenges associated with aging kitchen infrastructure, as well as the work involved in installing new underground drainage piping.
For this job the concrete had to be opened to access the drainage system and new PVC piping and fittings were installed beneath the floor.
It might not be glamourous work to most folks, but reliable drainage is absolutely essential in keeping a commercial kitchen functioning.

The most expensive sewer repair is the one you didn't need.
A recurring sewer backup doesn't automatically mean you need a new sewer line.
Roots, grease, scale buildup, damaged joints, poor slope, and collapsed pipe can produce similar symptoms—but they require very different solutions.
At American Mechanical KC, we believe in understanding the problem before recommending the repair.

👀What would you think if you walked into a building and saw THIS?

Most people never think about the plumbing beneath their feet, until of course, something goes wrong.
Sometimes getting to the problem is a project all by itself. Working inside an existing building means dealing with concrete, buried piping, limited access, and infrastructure that wasn’t necessarily designed with future repairs in mind.
It’s not always pretty but it’s how you get to a lasting solution.

Another Friday and we thought that we would share a little bit of what goes on behind the scenes at American Mechanical KC.
Most people only see the finished product, what they do not see is all the planning, preparation, precision, and hard work that goes into getting there.
These photos offer a glimpse into one of our pressure sewer retrofit projects- from carefully and safely preparing the work site to getting the new system installed.
Every project has its challenges, but at American Mechanical KC we think that is what makes this work interesting. No two jobs are exactly alike and there is always something to figure out.

Most people will never get to see this side of plumbing. Eddie sent over this footage from one of our sewer lining projects and we thought it was worth sharing.
At American Mechanical KC we are big believers in understanding what is happening inside a pipe before deciding how to fix it. From camera inspections and hydro jetting to trenchless sewer rehabilitation, our goal is to find the right solution for the actual problem.

Most people never get to see sewer work from this side of the pipe. This footage gives you a look inside the line while specialized sewer equipment is being positioned and operated.
It's a great example of something we at American Mechanical KC want people to understand about modern sewer work: there are a lot more options than simply running a cable through a drain or digging up a pipe.
Things like cameras, robotic equipment, high-volume jetting, mechanical descaling, trenchless rehabilitation, sectional repairs, and conventional excavation are all tools. At American Mechanical KC we understand the important part is determining which tool actually helps solve the problem.

The best place to cut into a finished floor is precisely where you need to and nowhere else.
Sewer repair inside of a finished building can get very expensive very quickly when proper diagnosis and planning are not done first.
On this pressure-sewer retrofit our work began well before the saw ever touched the floor. We identified the exact system layout, we determined where access was actually required, established the work area and carefully protected the surrounding space before we opened the floor.
Sometimes the right sewer solution is hydro jetting, sometimes it is descaling, CIPP rehabilitation, or a section repair.
Sometimes the system itself needs to be modified. The equipment comes second, the diagnosis comes first. This is the approach we continue to build American Mechanical KC around.

Sometimes cleaning the drain is not the solution. This project required us to go beyond conventional drain cleaning and modify the sewer system itself. Before opening up the finished floor we identified where access was actually required, carefully laid out the work area, and contained the surrounding space. Then we made the controlled opening necessary to complete the pressure-sewer retrofit. That is an important part of how we approach sewer work at American MechanicalKC: fully understand the problem before creating the solution.
