Knowing the difference between warranty and guarantee and price and value helps you make smarter choices as a buyer.
Price vs. Value
• Price is the exact amount of money you pay to buy something.
• Value is the overall worth, usefulness, and benefit you get from that item over time.
• The difference: Price is what you spend; value is what you gain. Cheap roofing shingles
only offer the illusion of a bargain; if they break down or leak prematurely, their actual
value is incredibly low. Conversely, a premium shingle option carries a higher upfront
price but lasts for decades, providing true high value by preventing expensive water
damage and constant maintenance. But know that your shingle is only worth the level
of workmanship (installation).
Warranty vs. Guarantee
• Warranty is a formal, written promise from a manufacturer or seller to repair or replace a
broken or faulty product within a set time.
• Guarantee is a broader, often spoken promise that a product will work well, or that you
can get a refund if you are not satisfied.
• The difference: A guarantee is a general promise of quality (like a "money-back
satisfaction promise"), while a warranty is a specific, legal contract focused on fixing or
swapping parts.
Be sure to read your contract to ensure you know what you are buying besides the shingles. There should be a manufacturer warranty as well as a workmanship warranty.
