𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗦. 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘.

If you've followed my writing, you've probably seen me refer to two sayings that have guided much of my life. Both were drilled into me during my time in the military:

𝟭. "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲."

𝟮. "𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗺𝘆."

I've written about both because I believe they apply just as much to everyday life as they do to military service.

But there's a third saying I live by, and I've never really given it the attention it deserves:

"𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀. 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲."

Think about that for a moment.

There's a tremendous difference between being unable to do something and having the ability to do it but consciously choosing not to.

Anyone can lose their temper. Anyone can lash out, escalate an argument, make threats, or allow pride and emotion to dictate their next move. It doesn't take much discipline to react when someone pushes your buttons.

But having the knowledge, experience, confidence, and ability to respond—and deliberately choosing restraint? That's an entirely different level of strength.

Some people mistake restraint for weakness. They assume that because someone doesn't argue, retaliate, or respond to provocation, that person must be intimidated, afraid, or incapable of standing up for themselves.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The quietest person in the room isn't necessarily the weakest. The person who walks away from an argument isn't necessarily the one who lost. And the person who refuses to engage in a confrontation may be the very person most capable of handling one.

True discipline isn't about proving what you can do. It's about knowing what you're capable of and understanding when, why, and whether that capability should ever be used.

That applies to physical confrontations, business disputes, personal relationships, and even the things we say to one another.

I've spent a lifetime learning that not every insult deserves an answer, not every challenge deserves a response, and not every battle deserves to be fought.

Does that mean I always get it right? Absolutely not. I'm human, and I have a temper just like anyone else. Sometimes keeping my mouth shut requires considerably more effort than opening it.

But that's precisely the point.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵, 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

My first saying reminds me to avoid unnecessary confrontation.

My second reminds me never to underestimate the person on the other side.

And my third reminds me that possessing the ability to act doesn't automatically justify using it.

𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼.

And in my opinion, that's a lesson worth remembering in a world where far too many people confuse aggression with strength and restraint with weakness.

Today, we pause to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or the beginning of summer — it is a time to honor those who never made it home and the families who continue to carry their memory forward every day.

Their sacrifice purchased freedoms many of us enjoy without a second thought, and that debt can never truly be repaid. We owe them our gratitude, our respect, and our commitment to never forget what was given on our behalf.

From all of us at The Maintenance Shop, we wish you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day. Take a moment today to reflect, remember, and honor those who gave everything for this nation.

Freedom has never been free.

𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀—𝗜𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲

Years ago, I learned two things that stuck. They sound like battlefield advice—and they are—, but they apply just as well to running a business, and personal life. 🇺🇸

1. 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗺𝘆.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 #𝟭 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱:
Assume the person on the other end is capable, informed, and willing to push back.
That keeps you honest. It forces you to:

• document everything 📋
• communicate clearly 🗣️
• build systems that hold up under pressure ⚙️

In other words, don’t rely on luck—rely on structure.

2. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐬 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 #𝟮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀:
Avoidance isn’t weakness. It’s efficiency.
If something doesn’t need to be a fight, don’t turn it into one. 🧠

In business, that looks like:

• setting clear expectations up front ✔️
• having solid terms in place 📑
• knowing when to stop explaining and let the process take over ⛔

You don’t win by arguing longer.
You win by 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹.

𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲:
Be prepared like it matters.
Operate like it’s already handled.

Works in business.
Works in life. 💯
