As I am sure many of you have noticed, the White pines are looking very yellow (even more so than in the fall). We have received numerous phone calls, emails and texts, so I thought I would post an explanation.

The culprit for this early season yellowing and soon to be needle drop are two fungal diseases (White Pine Needlecast and Brown Spot Needlecast). These fungal diseases thrived during the wet summer last year and we are seeing the effects now.

The needles that are lower on the tree get infected, and the fungus spreads eventually causing the death of that needle. Luckily the new needles are inside the bud thus not infected. Over the next week or two the infected needles will fall to the ground and the new needles will grow. White pines usually have three years worth of needles but this summer many will have just one year leaving a thin looking tree.

This usually doesn’t cause the trees mortality unless the trees was already in a weakened state.

If you have any tree concerns, feel free to reach out to us and we will be happy to come and assess your trees.

Since some people are not aware, I just wanted to post a picture of what is happening with Hemlock trees across our area and yes even on the islands. The larger white tufts at the base of the needle are Hemlock Woolly Adelgid and the tan/brown areas on the needle are Elongate Hemlock Scale.

These can and will likely kill the trees they are on in 5-10 years if not treated. We have found them on Locke, Rattlesnake, Cow, Bear, Welch, Diamond and Sleeper islands as well as almost every town in the Lakes Region this year.

I would recommend checking the underside of your Hemlock needles several times a year or reaching out to an arborist (we have several on staff) or your "tree guy" to have them evaluate your Hemlock trees and come up with a treatment plan if you feel they are worth saving. It is a relatively simple treatment if the treatment is done early.

Feel free to reach out to us at 603-279-9950, [email protected] or [email protected] if we can help with your tree or turf needs.

Now that April is here, we are only a few weeks away from the emergence of the Eastern Tent Caterpillar. Although it may not feel like it with the incoming snow storm, but these guys will be feasting on the newly emerging foliage in no time.

When the caterpillars first hatch out of the egg mass (which is wrapped around a twig), they are only a 1/4' long but grow rapidly up to two and a half inches long. The glossy egg masses contain 100-400 eggs which are laid by the adult moth the previous year. Larvae (caterpillars) are hairy with blue, black and orange markings, and a white stripe down the back. On cold or rainy days the caterpillars will stay in the "tent" and emerge on nice days to feed. The preferred tree species they feed on in our area are any fruit trees including crabapples and Black Cherry. Although they are not considered a threat to long term tree health, many homeowners find the tents and missing foliage unsightly.

If you have had issues with the Eastern Tent Caterpillar or other landscape or lawn pests, feel free to reach out to us at 603-279-9950 and we will be happy to discuss the options with you.

FROST DAMAGE: We have had a few inquiries about why some Oak trees have not leafed out or look like they are behind the other trees. The most likely reason is that chilly morning we had a week or so ago. That frost damaged the newly emerging tender leaves. We are noticing it more in the valley where the temperatures tend to be colder.

These trees should recover (put out another set of leaves) however if they lose these leaves to Spongy (Gypsy) Moth or other insects, the results could be terminal for these trees. If your trees was frost damaged and you need some advice, feel free to reach out to us.

Unfortunate news for White pines. Give us call if you are concerned about your trees.

This is concerning news. Our eastern white pines have been exhibiting signs of decline in recent years including yellowing/browning needles, premature needle shedding, thinning canopies and more. The causes are pathogens and insect pests that are believed to be native to eastern North America and this coupled with a changing climate is having a big impact.
