A good tile installation starts long before the first tile is set.

When we checked the concrete on this project with a straightedge, we found several areas that were well outside the flatness we needed for these 9"x36" tiles. With a tile this long, those variations in the substrate can create problems with the finished installation if they aren't addressed first.

We documented the problem areas, corrected the substrate, and prepared the floor before moving forward with the tile installation.

Floor prep isn't the exciting part of a finished project, but it's one of the most important parts of doing it right.

A completely new look for this basement with 9"x36" wood-look porcelain tile.

The longer plank-style tile gives the room the appearance and warmth of a wood floor while keeping the durability of porcelain tile. We carried the same layout throughout the space for a continuous finished look.

This project also required quite a bit of preparation before the first tile could go down — something we'll show in another post.
