Here’s a before and after of a kitchen remodel. These are original cabinets that the homeowner wanted refreshed. Not only did I sand and refinish the paint, I added trim to create a shaker style. I updated the hinges as the originals were fragile and not easily available. I would have hated to do all the work and have a hinge break and not be able to replace it. It created some challenges to make the changes but it was all very worth it. I also built the cabinet that is between the refrigerator and range. This gave them a large drawer for cooking utensils, a pull out garbage can and recycling, and a narrow cabinet that is great for cookie sheets and cutting boards.

Another part I tackled was reducing the size of the old soffit that likely had upper cabinets from a previous remodel. I added pendant lights there and above the sink, which needed an original, old built-in recessed light removed .

This is a great example of “Building Dreams Into Equity”. According to costvsvalue.com, midrange kitchen remodels can be a 113% return on your investment. However, there is a lot of gray area of what the real values can be. The most important thing, I find, is that you create a space that you want and enjoy!

Here’s a project I did for an adorable country home. The client had been using a little cart for a number of years that they enjoyed, but wished it was bigger for storage and counter space. They wanted to keep their existing cabinets and use their cart in an expanded version .

They also had a small space to the left of their range that could be used. They had a drawing of what they were looking to do. I took that and added a little of my input to get to the final product.

Here’s a before and after on a stairway refresh. The original stairway is just painted construction lumber. It looked good. The customer had improved their flooring in the past and was now wanting a similar finish to their stairs.

Although it may look straight forward, this stairway presented some challenges. I used an engineered stair tread and riser kit. However, the original stair treads were slightly deeper than the new tread cap and the bottom two steps are longer. My solution was to carry the wall casing down through the bottom two stairs and a small quarter round trim where the tread and risers meet. I think it was a good solution to make it all work. My goal is to find solutions to a problem and make it appear that there was never a problem and it was always the plan all along.

This customer has a tight garage space stairway. They wanted a small landing with the stairs turned along the wall. They wanted to keep it as basic as possible. They don’t have a need for spindles for little ones, so I was okay with just a top railing. With the tight space, it will be beneficial to be able to turn something into the doorway as needed. They could potentially easily remove the top rail for a moment to get something through.

This also raises what NickBuilt offers on a consulting platform. Most importantly, if you are looking to build a house, I offer pointing out some of these concerns before it gets to this point. In this two car garage they didn’t really offer enough room to comfortably park two cars with entry into the house. However, this is compounded by the previous owner when they remodeled and moved the entry to its current location. Either way, in both situations, I can consult through this to help create the best outcome. The worst thing you can do is go through all the work and money of a new build or remodel and be disappointed of the final layout.

Let me know if I can help you out on your project!

This is a picture of some screening I did for a client in the city. They have a courtyard at their rented home. So, they couldn’t do anything permanent or attached. I came up with a solution that is working very well for them. I attached panels to some framework that is tightly fitted and weighted with cinder blocks. I was even able to create a functional gate.

This was a case of a small leak from a hot water heater located in a utility closet with the furnace. It’s not a place someone would look in very often. This is a reminder to make a point of inspecting these types of areas in your house on occasion. This leak continued for a long period of time to cause this damage, but I’m glad I could help get it back to a safe condition.

This client had relocated their stairway from their living room to a new location. They had hardwood floors that needed to be filled in and weaved into the old flooring. I was able to get the floor patched in and they will likely refinish the entire floor in the future. That’s a great benefit of hardwood floors.

Here’s a landscaping project I did earlier this year. I took some after pictures now that the grass has come in good. Some of the challenges on this was blending the old landscape into the new and inviting the upstairs space outside and down the path to the water. This is a newly renovated interior Airbnb that each level can be rented separately or together, and it is lakefront on Balsam Lake.

This customer had relocated their stairway to a new addition recently. My job was to continue their hardwood floor. I blended in some new flooring for them. It will likely need to be sanded and refinished at a later time but they have a level floor for now.

Sometimes it’s the little things! This is a new mailbox. Even better it has an alarm on it now so you know when the mail comes. For some people that’s exciting. For some it’s for safety. Safety you may ask? For some it’s not easy to get to the mailbox, and multiple unnecessary trips to check on it is risky. No job is too small!

Do you need some new flooring? Here’s a job I did. I also added base molding for the client.
