Spare yourself the disappointment of not having color in your yard when spring comes!

If you want tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other spring bulbs in your landscape next year, now is the time to get them in the ground.

For Southeast Wisconsin, the ideal planting window generally runs from mid-September through mid-November. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot, give the soil a little preparation, plant at the proper depth and add a light layer of mulch.

Then comes the easy part: wait for spring.

When you think about planting, spring probably comes to mind. But fall can actually be a great time to get plants in the ground.

Cooler air and warm soil give plants a chance to put their energy into root growth before winter. With more rainfall and less summer heat, they also tend to need less watering.

So what should you plant this fall?

• Bulbs, like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for spring color
• Perennials that have time to establish their roots before winter
• Trees and shrubs
• Native plants that are well suited to our region

A few things to keep in mind:

• Water deeply and regularly until the ground freezes
• Add mulch to help protect roots from temperature swings
• Give plants enough time to establish before winter
• Choose sunny, well-drained locations for bulbs

A little work this fall can make a big difference when spring rolls around.
