Wow!
Thanks to Mayor Howell Todd, City Recorder Leigh Grice, Aldermen Judy Smith and Barbara McClure and all the citizens of Clarksburg and the surrounding communities that make it such a great place. I graduated from Clarksburg High School in 1993, I’ve traveled around the world, lived in two other states and New Zealand and as I am in the beginning stages of building my forever home on my farm, there is no other place I had rather be.

It's elderberry flowering time in Tennessee! The beautiful native, (Sambucus canadensis) can be seen blooming throughout the entire state alone roadside edges, ditches, unmowed fields, flower beds, abandon lots, edges of woods, around power poles, fence rows, cracks in the asphalt, you get the idea. EVERYWHERE!

When the elderberry health craze hit a few years ago, I found it amusing that people would pay sometimes big dollars for a plant that grows wild virtually everywhere and depending on where you live and how much land you own your likely to already have it on your property. It can very much be a w**d in the wrong place. Many people don't realize the "w**d" they are digging up or spraying is elderberry.

Here’s a still shot of my dash decorations this morning. If you missed it I did a Facebook Live from my daylilies this morning and then posted a video after church talking about these on the dash. I enjoyed them on the way to church, then to my mother’s. I left them at her house to enjoy the rest of the day.

Daylily blooms only last one day and do not need to be in water once they’ve opened. Obviously if it was sunny outside and you parked for more than a few minutes they would melt. I have been adorning my dash with daylilies since I was in grad school in the late 90’s. When they were in flower and I would make the five hour drive from my parents to grad school, I would lay them on my dash and enjoy them on the way back to Knoxville.

You can enjoy their breathtaking beauty indoors by simply laying them on the counter. Just remember to be sure and throw them away before you go to bed, otherwise by morning they’ll be slimy and hard to clean up.

Happy Sunday! I recorded this before church this morning but didn’t have time to post it. I enjoyed this on the way to church this morning and now will on the way to my mother’s for lunch. I will leave them for her to enjoy today.

So excited to hear a bobwhite quail calling at my farm in Clarksburg Tennessee. I saw a couple fly when walking through my wildlife plot yesterday morning.

Turn the volume up. There’s remnants of a small old livestock pond in the woods near my house which only holds water when it rains a lot. It hasn’t had any water in it this spring because of the drought we’ve been in but apparently the rain over the last week and the 3 inches in the last 36 hours have brought the frogs in.

It’s been raining since 5 PM and it’s 9 PM now. There is flooding in Clarksburg, Huntingdon and McKenzie Tennessee.

Friday, June 5th early morning garden tour. Garden #3, All Saints Anglican Church.

Jackson, Tennessee, hardiness zone 7. Photos taken between 6:45 and 7:15 AM. Seven Master Gardeners attended church At All Saints and make up the landscape committee. When they asked me to assist with the landscape design in early 2023 I was delighted to help their dreams of a beautiful landscape come to fruition. The building was completed in time for fall installation and anything that’s best not planted in the fall or winter such as the ornamental grasses, hardy lantan, hardy camellias and Loropetalum we waited until the following spring to plant.

If you’ve been following me for the last couple years you’ve seen me make some post about the plants at All Saints. There are six beds in the parking lot that we filled with a mass of drought tolerant plants. Four are native to the southeast. They are mountain mint (Pycnanthemum), pink muhly grass,
(Muhlenbergia capillaris), ‘White Cloud’ muhly grass and Amsonia hubrichtii. The other two beds contain ‘Buttered Popcorn’ daylily and ‘Ham and Eggs’ hardy lantana. The beds with the muhly grass and lantana have struggled. Survivability of those three has been about 50%. I think it’s probably due to pour drainage.

I fell to get a picture showing the building itself but it’s a beautiful. If you’re in the Jackson area you might want to take a look. It’s located at 212 McClellan Rd, right beside University School of Jackson.
