Putman Hill Nursery

First stop on Friday afternoon on my quick trip to speak at region 3 Lilyhemmer daylily meeting in York, PA.

It was such a pleasure meeting and talking with the owner Melanie of Putnam Hill Nursery. Her small perennial nursery and home is tucked in the beautiful countryside north of Baltimore Maryland in of Harford county. I went home with some cool plants.

Thanks to Sam Bahr and Janet Drapper for suggesting I visit Putman Hill.

It want be long until I have to pack up my Heartwood Nursery finds from yesterday for my 6:55AM flight from Lilyhemmer Daylily meetings in York, PA.

I bought these yesterday in route from Baltimore airport to York. I placed paper towels under them to wick out some of the moisture and elevated them in front of the HVAC system so they won’t be so heavy in my luggage.

Pumpkins, gourds and winter squash display at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville Tennessee. Displays can be viewed at Ellington daylight to dark through Thanksgiving. They are located at Moss, the Library, Holman and the Museum.

It’s been almost 10 years since I stoped growing and making cucurbit displays at my former job. It’s great to get my hands back into working with them.

Special thanks to my coworker John, friends Sandy and Linda from Bowling Green Kentucky and Beth from Nashville for helping me with the displays.

Looking for suggestions of things to do with a half a day free in and between Baltimore, MD and York, PA. Nurseries, garden centers, public gardens, craft market, etc. I be visiting Heartwood Nursery in York.

I be visiting the gardens in the Brandywine Valley (Logwood, Nemours, Winterthur, Mount Cuba, Chanticleer etc.) soon so no need to go that direction.

Looking for suggestions on what you would plant in these areas. North side of a two-story building. Lots of light but very little direct sign and only in the peak of summer. Beds 30 inches wide. No irrigation and no easy access to water. Hardness zone 7 with the average of 45 days during the summer above 90°.

Unfortunately I only received 1/3 inch of a rain from Isaias.

Just because the temperatures are no longer in the 90s doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue to water if you’re in the area that is not receiving rain.

Don't forget to keep an eye on trees and shrubs that are not well established and plants that form their flower buds in late summer in preparation for fall, winter or spring blooms. Camellias, whichhazel, azaleas, hydrangeas, Edgeworth and Corylopsis (spike winterhazel) are some not to be overlooked. Fall blooming camellias are begin flower.

Tips for watering from the end of a hose.

Focus on the root zone when possible.

Time of day. Water in the morning when possible. When the soil is dry and the plants are thirsty, water when you can. The old wives tale that if you water a plant when the sun is out, will burn the leaves is nothing but just that, an old wives tale. The plant doesn’t care when you water.

Water deeply and thoroughly. Annuals and turf grass concentrate their roots in the top 6-8 inches of soil. Perennials, shrubs and trees in the top 12-18 inches. It may take hours for water to percolate down. Use your finger or a shovel to check the progress.

During dry periods trees and shrubs less than a year old will likely need direct watering every 7 to 10 days. If planted in the last couple months, they will likely need it more often.

Plant of the day, ‘Warrior’ onion.

Planted on May 13th at the Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville from three packs, ‘Warrior’ onion continues to be the most asked ask about plant by visitors and coworkers.

I have been growing this outstanding onion since it became a AAS Garden Winners in 2016. It never disappoints.

This seed grown bunching/green onion was introduced to the market for its “very uniform crop of slender, crisp onion stalks that are easy to harvest and clean. Can’t get to your harvest? No worries as Warrior will hold up in the garden longer than similar varieties”, but I grow it for its beautiful spiky foliage that remains blue throughout the growing season. One of my favorite combinations is to plant it amongst Vinca in as seen in the photos. It makes a great “thriller” in a pot.
