Who says cranberry pie can’t be enjoyed in the summer. I buy and freeze cranberries around the holidays to enjoy though out the year.

Be careful out there! It was awful yesterday afternoon and going to be worse today.

If you work outdoors as I do all day, every day, be sure and drink plenty of water get some electrolytes and know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Anyone have any experience Garvee pallet forks? I’m looking to purchase forks that will attach to the bucket on my tractor. I’ve read reviews and watched a couple YouTube videos on the Garvee brand. They seem to be a good product for the money.

Anyone have a recommendation on black aquatic water dye for koi ponds? I know botanical garden use it shade out algae and make for beautiful reflection in the water.

My mother grows the best candlestick plants (Cassia alata aka Senna alata). Hers always start flowering several weeks before the ones I grew when I worked at UT or at my house. This is the first year in probably 15 years I have not had one in my home garden. This one in Mother’a garden was given to me by our friend Katie who grew a handful from seed. I will offer them for sale along with other more unusual annuals and perennials next year in the spring.

Not only do I appreciate it for it big bow foliage, beautiful yellow candle light blooms but also sore attracting and feeding sulfur butterfly adults and caterpillars. Its foliage is the host plant for the cloudless sulfur butterfly caterpillars.

I grew them from seed each year for the plant sales at my former job. It is an annual and challenging and slow to germinate the seed. That is why you rarely find them available at a nursery or garden center. Unfortunately in all but the warmest parts of Tennessee we get a frost before the seed mature. So search the web and seed catalogs for a seed source.

If your pots are over full and you're having trouble keeping them watered and/or they are looking straggly don't worry, give them a haircut and a dose of water soluble fertilize and they should look good right up until the killing freeze.

What a great day it was Tuesday at the UT Gardens: Crossville, The Plateau Discovery Gardens speaking at their annual Fall Gardens’ Festival. The free annual event was attended by over 1,000 garden enthusiast. Shalena, UT staff and dozens of Master Gardeners volunteers did an excellent job organizing and executing the day.

My topic was growing Sarracenia (pitcher plants). I have been growing Sarracenia since purchasing my first ones in 1998 at the Cullowhee Native Plant Conference.

It was great seeing so many friends and colleagues Lucas Holman, Andy Pulte, Whitney Hale, Vicki Folsom, Emily Richardson, Janet Dowlen, etc.

Thanks to my mother Linda Wallace and Beth Corley Webb for helping me with my sale of Sarracenias.

Before and after pictures of what will be the crawlspace under my house.

The block layers finished on Monday and the framers begin on yesterday. Today while the framers were working on the portion over the basement, Noah and I picked up all the debris and soothed out the soil. It took us most of the day using shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and the tiller.

When my contractor Don came by to check on things he told me I could go into business. It was by far the smoothest crawlspace he had ever seen. When Doug saw it this evening he asked, are you going to plant a garden? I replied mushroom! 😂

It will actually be encapsulated when completed and I wanted it be smooth.
