Memorial Day

"Where flowers bloom, so does hope." - Lady Bird Johnson

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” - Jesus, John 15:13

"Our nation endures only because of those who dedicated their lives to its defense." - Barack Obama

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." - General George S. Patton

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction." - Ronald Reagan

"I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free." -
Lee Greenwood

Take some time today to remember the brave men and women who laid down their lives so we could live in freedom.

Before church this morning, trying to get ahead of the badly needed rain, I swap the pansies out for summer annuals in the pots in front of the Clarksburg City Hall.

Plants included Rockin'® Fuchsia salvia, Sweet Caroline Bewitched Green With Envy™ sweet potato vine and Supertunia®Bordeaux™ petunia from Proven Winners and Alternanthera 'Purple Prince' and Titan™ vinca from PanAmerican Seed and a yellow lantana.

I removed 75% of the potting soil and replaced it with fresh potting soil. As I have done for more than 20 years in my own pots I mixed a little bit of actual soil from my woods into the potting soil to help it hold extra moisture and help prevent it from pulling away from the sides of the pot if it does out. It doesn’t take much. I roughly use one part soil to nine parts good quality potting soil. Be sure and crumble the soil finally and mix it thoroughly with the potting soil. My favorites potting soils are Pro Mix, Berger and Fertilome Ultimate Potting Mix because they’re always consistent and you know what you’re getting in the bag when you open it up unlike most other brands of potting soil.

Please don’t be offended if I am at your house and start dead heading.

There’s something about it that’s therapeutic to me. Kind of like vacuuming s**g carpet, it’s instant gratification. 😂

I even enjoy deadhead plants that don’t need deadheading like Torenia and modern petunias which have been bred not to need to be dead headed.

The basement foundation for my house is poured and they have started putting up the forms for the basement walls and safe room up! With the chance of rain every day next week not sure when they’ll get back to it but I’m so thankful for the rain.

Plant of the day, Papaver somniferum, the o***m / bread seed poppy.

These reseeding annuals bring me so much joy each May but are about finished for the season at my house and my farm in Clarksburg, Tennessee, hardiness zone 7. I’ve been growing red o***m poppies for more than 35 years shared with me by gardening friend. Thanks to my friend Brie Arthur for sharing some packs of her assortment of colors with me last October. I planted them on January 10 at my farm. See the last three photos for screenshots of that post.

For more information check out the link below to an article I help write as well as Brie Grows.
