Enjoy this teaser of details from my new painting, The Heart Goes First. A story of love and friendship inspired by the ancient Egyptian symbol of the ib. The Egyptians imagined the spiritual heart as a jar that we fill like a jar with the cooling waters of memory to guide us in the afterlife. More on this artwork to come. 🏺❤️‍🔥🏝️

Recently I've been working on a collection of 8x10 portrait paintings for my next art fair. It's been a fun way to experiment with different modes of painting, interesting color palettes, and studying facial features. Which one is your favorite? Untergang, 2022, oil on linen.

Four years later and this painting still speaks to me. Holding on for dear life, even if all I have is the flesh on my bones, while dark storms gather on the horizon. The worst possible people are leading the world's nations, waving nukes and AI like children's toys while civilization implodes. Yes, the terrifying lightning is also the flash of sudden insight, a wake up call, an initiation. But I refuse the spiritual bypass of everything's gonna be okay. I allow myself to feel the fear, grief, and outrage of this moment, because I'm still human, defiant against the titanic forces hellbent on destroying our beautiful broken world.

So much of my art revolves around synchronicities ✨ Case in point: I painted Halcyon Gaze in Seattle in 2022, after a powerful vision of kingfishers diving by moonlight 🌙 Fast forward to 2024, my jaw drops when a hand-me-down kayak allows me to explore the waterways in my new Florida home for the first time 🚤 I saw expansive waters, distant mangrove islands, gnarly old trees, and yes, kingfishers! 🐦 The landscape was eerily similar to what emerged from my imagination, years before I ever knew this place existed. Synchronicities like this happen to me a lot, where the imaginal and material worlds collide. They are blessings, gentle nudges from the cosmos that I am, we all are, held lovingly in the arms of the World Soul. These moments give me strength to keep going when life and art feel impossible. 💙

This weekend we experience the annual Lion's Gate portal on August 8, when the Earth, Sun, and Sirius align in the astrological sign of Leo, followed by a total solar eclipse in Leo on August 12. This is a powerful time to align our heart's purpose with the cosmos, making way for spiritual transformation. My painting De Sidere was created as a sort of icon for such occasions, a portal for contemplation. Enjoy ❤️‍🔥

Slow and steady is the key to painting beautiful flesh tones. I like to start with a monochrome underpainting (grisaille) to establish the form. I usually use white with a little raw umber or green earth. Next, I scrub a transparent glaze over the working area, called a "couch." This retains the already established form while making it easy to judge colors by getting everything closer to the average hue. Next, I paint final colors into the couch with overlapping tiles, carefully turning the form. If I work slowly and methodically, I can complete the figure in one color pass with minimal touch ups after. Let me know your questions in the comments.
