“Your brother died three years ago. You’re not still grieving. That’s called depression.”
Those words were said to me.
What I’ve learned is this: one of the most painful things someone can do is try to define your grief for you.
Grief isn’t a weakness. It isn’t something that expires after a certain number of months or years. It isn’t a character flaw that needs to be diagnosed because it makes someone else uncomfortable.
Grief is love that continues after loss.
Some days, I smile. Some days, I cry. Some days, I remember him in silence. Every one of those moments is part of healing.
If someone has ever told you that you should “be over it by now,” please know this: they don’t get to decide what your heart should feel. No one gets to put a timeline on your love or your loss.
Be gentle with yourself. The people who truly care about you will never ask you to stop loving someone who mattered.
