A well-tended garden doesn't happen on its own. This kitchen garden gets regular attention through the season, staking, w**ding, harvesting, so it keeps producing and stays this productive, including this family's favorite fruits (blueberries) and vegetables. 🌿

Nothing here goes to waste: peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, and a few zinnias for good measure. This week’s harvest picked and donated to a local food pantry while our client was away. 🍅🫑🥒

Harvesting is about collecting what’s ready, but also an important part of what keeps a garden productive. Many of these crops, tomatoes and peppers especially, will keep setting new fruit as long as the ripe ones are picked. Leave them on the vine too long and the plant shifts energy toward ripening seed instead of growing more, so regular harvesting is what keeps the yield coming through the season. 🌱

A meadow in high summer is alive in a way a lawn never is. 🌾 Grasses moving in the wind, daisies and butterfly w**d drawing in pollinators, a whole small ecosystem doing its quiet thing.

Establishing one takes patience, the right prep, a season or two of care, and ongoing attention to keep it thriving. The payoff is a living landscape that gives back to the land around it.

As our gardens start to slow down, we're thinking about harvesting herbs to dry and save. Our preferred method is air-drying the herbs by hanging them upside down in a cool dry place. Once fully dried out, we store them in jars to use throughout the year or combine them into flavorful recipes of herb salts!
