πŸ‚ Why Do Fall Pests Start Showing Up Early?
You might think pest problems are only a concern once temperatures really start to dropβ€”but many pests begin preparing for cooler weather well before fall officially arrives.
As late summer temperatures fluctuate, pests start looking for warm, dry, protected places where they can shelter through the colder months. Your home can quickly become an attractive option.
🏠 Common fall-invader entry points include:
β€’ Gaps around windows and doors
β€’ Cracks in foundations and exterior walls
β€’ Openings around utility lines and vents
β€’ Gaps beneath siding or around rooflines
β€’ Unsealed areas around garages and other exterior structures
🐜 What you may notice first:
βœ” More insects gathering on sunny exterior walls
βœ” Increased activity around windows and doors
βœ” Occasional pests appearing indoors
βœ” More insects around foundation areas
The key is early prevention. Checking your home's exterior and addressing potential entry points before pest activity increases can help reduce the chance of unwanted visitors settling indoors.
If you're already noticing unusual pest activity around your home, don't wait for the problem to grow.

🐝 Late Summer Means Increased Wasp Activity Around Your Home
Late summer is one of the most active times of year for wasps and yellowjackets. Colonies are larger, workers are actively searching for food, and nests around homes may be easier to encounter during everyday outdoor activities.
Areas around your home to watch include:
🐝 Eaves, soffits, and rooflines
🐝 Decks, porches, and patios
🐝 Garages and sheds
🐝 Doorways and exterior structures
🐝 Areas around trash and recycling containers
A few prevention tips:
βœ” Keep outdoor food and sweet drinks covered
βœ” Keep trash containers tightly closed
βœ” Watch for repeated wasp activity around the same area
βœ” Regularly check eaves, decks, and other sheltered locations
βœ” Avoid disturbing a nest if you discover one
If you’re seeing frequent wasp activity around your property, a professional inspection can help locate the source and determine the appropriate next steps.

🐝 Why Do Wasp Stings Peak in Late Summer?
If you've noticed more aggressive wasps around your home lately, you're not imagining it.
Late summer is when paper wasp and yellowjacket colonies reach their largest size. With more workers actively searching for food, they're also more likely to defend their nests if they feel threatened.
That means everyday activities like grilling, gardening, mowing the lawn, or enjoying your patio can unintentionally bring you too close to a hidden nest.

Here's why Late Summer is peak sting season:
βœ”οΈ Colonies are at their largest population.
βœ”οΈ More worker wasps are actively foraging.
βœ”οΈ Food sources become scarcer, making wasps more aggressive.
βœ”οΈ Nests are harder to notice under eaves, decks, and outdoor structures.
If you see increased wasp activity around your property, don't attempt to remove the nest yourself. Professional inspection helps identify nesting locations and provides the safest solution.

🐝 Wasp Nests Don’t Usually Disappear on Their Own

That small nest you spotted around your home? It can become a much bigger problem as the season progresses.

As a colony grows, wasps can become more defensiveβ€”especially when their nest is disturbedβ€”creating a greater risk for your family, pets, and anyone using your outdoor spaces.

⚠️ A growing wasp nest can mean:
βœ”οΈ More wasps around your home
βœ”οΈ Increased defensive behavior
βœ”οΈ Greater risk of painful stings
βœ”οΈ Less enjoyment of your yard and outdoor areas

If you’re noticing increased wasp activity, don’t wait for the problem to get worse. A professional inspection can help locate the nest and determine the safest solution.

🐝 Think That Wasp Nest Will Go Away on Its Own? Think Again.
A small wasp nest can quickly grow into a colony with hundreds of aggressive wasps. The longer it's left untreated, the greater the risk of painful stings and dangerous encounters for your family, pets, or visitors.
⚠️ Untreated wasp nests can:
βœ”οΈ Continue growing throughout the season
βœ”οΈ Become increasingly defensive when disturbed
βœ”οΈ Put children and pets at greater risk
βœ”οΈ Make outdoor spaces uncomfortable to enjoy
If you've noticed wasp activity around your home, don't wait until someone gets stung. A professional inspection can identify the nest and recommend the safest solution.

🐜 Why Do Ants Keep Coming Back?
If you've cleaned the trail but ants keep returning, you're not alone.
Worker ants leave behind invisible pheromone trails that guide the rest of the colony to food and water.
Simply wiping away visible ants may not solve the underlying problem if the colony remains nearby.
Professional inspections help identify nesting sites and recommend long-term prevention strategies.

🏑 Tiny Crumbs. Big Invitation.
Late summer is one of the most common times for ants to enter kitchens.
As outdoor food becomes scarce, ants begin searching for easy meals inside your home. Countertops, pet food, pantries, sinks, and even small crumbs can quickly attract foraging ants.
Reduce Kitchen Ant Activity
βœ” Clean food spills immediately.
βœ” Store pantry items in sealed containers.
βœ” Empty trash regularly.
βœ” Fix plumbing leaks.
βœ” Keep pet food areas clean.
If ants continue returning, there may be a colony nearby that requires professional treatment.

🧳 Summer Adventures Shouldn't Bring Home Unwanted Guests

Summer is the season for vacations, youth camps, hotel stays, family reunions, and weekend getawaysβ€”but it's also one of the busiest times for bed bug travel.

Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers. They don't care if a hotel is budget-friendly or five-star. These tiny pests can hide in luggage, backpacks, clothing, and personal belongings before making their way into your home.

🏨 When You Arrive at Your Hotel

βœ” Place your luggage in the bathtub or on the bathroom floor while you inspect the room. Avoid placing luggage on the bed or upholstered furniture.

βœ” Carefully inspect the mattress seams, headboard, and upholstered furniture for signs of bed bugs.

βœ” Once you've finished inspecting the room, place your luggage on a luggage rack positioned away from the bed and walls.

🏑 When You Return Home

βœ” Wash and dry all travel clothing on the highest heat setting recommended for the fabric.

βœ” Carefully inspect your suitcase before bringing it into storage.

βœ” Vacuum luggage if needed and store it in a clean, dry area.

βœ” Be especially cautious after youth camps, overnight trips, cruises, or extended travel.

Early detection can help prevent a small problem from becoming a costly infestation.

If you suspect bed bugs after traveling, don't wait. A professional inspection can provide peace of mind and help protect your home.

πŸ¦‹ Adam's Brings the Bugs to Critter Fest! 🐞

At Adam's Pest Control, we believe pest management starts with understanding the incredible creatures that share our world.

This year, we were proud to participate in the Science Museum of Minnesota's annual Critter Fest in downtown St. Paulβ€”a family-friendly celebration of science, nature, and the amazing diversity of animals and insects. Visitors enjoyed hands-on experiences with everything from therapy dogs, reptiles, and llamas to fascinating insects and other invertebrates, making it a fun and educational event for all ages.

Representing Adam's Pest Control were Thomas Salba and Theron Jones, who shared their passion for entomology with children and families. Our booth featured an impressive collection of butterflies, moths, dragonflies, beetles, and preserved insect specimens, along with two crowd favorites: live Madagascar hissing cockroaches and gentle millipedes, which many brave young visitors held for the very first time.

From curious questions to nervous giggles and proud smiles, it was inspiring to watch children replace uncertainty with curiosity. These hands-on experiences help people appreciate the important role insects play in healthy ecosystems and reinforce why understanding pests is the first step toward responsible, science-based pest management.

We're also proud to support our community as a sponsor of the Science Museum of Minnesota and as the trusted pest management provider helping protect this outstanding educational destination.

Thank you to everyone who visited our booth, asked great questions, and shared in the excitement of discovering the natural world. We look forward to seeing you at next year's Critter Fest!

🌑️ Why Are Millipedes Suddenly Showing Up Around Your Home?
Have you noticed more millipedes crawling around your foundation, patio, garage, or landscaped areas during the hottest days of summer?
It's actually a common seasonal occurrence.
When temperatures climb above 90Β°F, the soil begins to dry out. Millipedes naturally seek cooler, moist environments, often migrating toward the shaded sides of homes, mulch beds, flower gardens, and other damp areas. Their activity can become even more noticeable after rainfall or lawn irrigation.
The good news? These seasonal visitors are usually responding to environmental conditionsβ€”not because your home is infested.
Help Reduce Millipede Activity
βœ” Reduce excess moisture around your home's foundation.
βœ” Remove leaf litter and decaying organic debris.
βœ” Keep mulch several inches away from the foundation.
βœ” Improve drainage around your property.
βœ” Schedule a professional exterior inspection if millipede activity becomes excessive.
At Adam's Pest Control, we focus on long-term solutions by identifying the conditions that attract pestsβ€”not just treating the symptoms.
