Box Elder bugs will be starting to swarm on the sides of buildings soon! If you notice clusters of them on the south or west side of your building, they may start to move indoors when the weather cools down. As fall and winter near, they will start migrating indoors to overwinter. They won’t do damage to your home or people, but they will stain curtains and light colored siding and produce a foul smell when crushed!

Monarch Butterflies are starting their yearly migration! You will probably start to see them from now until late September. They are making their way to Mexico to overwinter from the freezing temperatures we have here in the US and Canada. In the spring, they will start the journey back up North before laying their eggs and dying. The next generation then uses its instincts to migrate, continuing the cycle. Since they only live up to 9 months, the butterflies will only ever make the journey once!

It’s about that time of year, when you may start to see Tarantulas, especially west of Medicine Lodge! The Texas Brown Tarantulas will be on the move for the next couple months as the males make the trek out of their burrows for a mate. They are going to be most active from evening to dawn. But don’t worry if you come across one, they are more likely to run than fight and even if they bite, it’s harmless and will feel like a bee sting!

August is peak season for Black Widows here in Kansas! The females are now fully grown and probably guarding an egg sac that will soon hatch! Did you now that a single female black widow can make from 10 to 20 eggs sacs in a season? Be cautious for there messy, irregular webs in woodpiles, stacked bricks, old buildings, and outdoor meters or electrical boxes, because you don’t want to get bit!

If you think it’s been hot lately, so do the termites! During this time of year, termites aren’t swarming very much, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t active underground or in your home. Worker termites continue eating wood and traveling through mud tubes all day long. So even though you may not see obvious signs, they may still be there. If you’ve noticed new mud tubes around your foundation or are just wanting some peace of mind, let us know and we can come do an inspection!

Striped Bark Scorpions can be prominent in our area, especially this time of year. July and August are the peak of their movement, which means at night they are roaming around looking for food, like spiders and insects. These little predators have poor eyesight, so they rely on tiny hairs on their pincers to detect vibrations and air movement. This allows them to locate prey and navigate! Although their venomous stings are painful, they are almost never fatal, but it’s still a good idea to check any shoes or clothes left outside and seal up any holes that they might sneak into your house through!

Wasps are probably among the insects that you try hard to avoid! Paper wasps are highly active this time of year, and if you have a nest hanging near your porch or home it could have dozens of wasps in it that are ready to sting if they feel threatened! They are considered a beneficial insect, so as long as they aren’t in an area that threats you or someone else, it’s a good idea to just leave them be.
