When diagnosing an electric water heater, one of the first things we check is voltage.

Homes in the U.S. operate on a 120/240V electrical system. Standard outlets and most small appliances use 120V, while larger appliances like electric water heaters use the full 240V supply.

For this water heater, we verified: ✔️ 240V across both hot legs ✔️ 120V from each hot leg to ground

Everything checked out exactly as it should. That means the heating elements are receiving the proper voltage and can efficiently heat the water. Sometimes a simple voltage check can quickly confirm whether the power supply is doing its job before moving on to other troubleshooting.

A customer in Raleigh was recentlyhaving an issue with their washing machine not dispensing water properly. At first glance, the receptacle tested perfectly with no load. But once the washing machine was pulling power, the voltage dropped dramatically.

After troubleshooting, we traced the issue back to a burnt-up circuit breaker. We repaired the damaged breaker, restored proper voltage, and got everything working exactly as it should.
