🛠️ Top Homeowner HVAC FAQs from Our Team!

1. How long should my HVAC system actually last?
*The Short Answer: 10 to 15 years on average (up to 20 years with consistent maintenance).
*What to consider: If your unit is over 10–12 years old and requires frequent or expensive repairs, replacing it with a modern, high-efficiency model is often more cost-effective long-term.

2. Should I repair or replace my aging AC/heat pump?
*The ""Rule of 5,000"": Multiply the age of your unit by the cost of the repair. If the total exceeds $5,000, replacement is generally the smarter investment.
*Red Flags: Soaring monthly energy bills, uneven temperatures across rooms, or clicking/grinding noises.

3. What is going on with the new refrigerant standards (A2L / R-454B)?
*The Update: Federal regulations phase out older refrigerants like R-410A in favor of eco-friendly, lower-GWP alternatives like R-454B and R-32.
*Does this affect my current unit? No. You do not need to replace a working system. Parts and existing refrigerants will remain available for servicing existing equipment for years to come.

4. How can I lower my monthly utility bills right now?
*Change Air Filters: Replace standard 1-inch filters every 30 to 90 days (clogged filters force the blower motor to work twice as hard).
*Upgrade to Smart Controls: Programmable smart thermostats and room sensors prevent systems from overworking when no one is home.
*Tune-Ups: Regular professional maintenance prevents efficiency losses of up to 15% over time.

💡 Pro Tip for Homeowners
Always ask for a load calculation before buying a new unit. Simply replacing a system with the ""same size"" ignore structural updates, insulation changes, or ductwork condition, leading to short-cycling or hot/cold spots.

🏠 Can You Put Furniture in Front of Your HVAC Return? 🤔

Let’s be honest, sometimes the return vent is placed in the WORST possible spot in the room.

But here’s why it matters: your return vent’s job is to pull air back into your HVAC system to keep it circulating and cooled or heated properly. Blocking it makes your system work twice as hard, driving up energy bills and putting extra wear on your blower motor.

So, can you put furniture near it?

Ideally, you want to leave at least 6 to 12 inches of breathing room around the grille.

But is leaving it wide open always realistic? For most homeowners, no. If you need to put a console or table in front of a return vent, opt for an open-backed shelf or pieces with open legs so air can easily flow underneath and around it. Avoid pushing solid couches, beds, or cabinets flat against the wall.

Your furniture can stay, just give your return the clearance it needs to keep your air moving! 🌬️

💡 Noticing extra noise coming from your vents, or feeling hot and cold spots around the house? Restricted airflow might be the culprit. Give our team a call or send us a message to get your airflow checked!
