If you've looked at the weather forecast for the week, you may have noticed that tomorrow night (Tuesday) has a low temperature of 29 degrees! It would be a really good idea to cover any backflow devices that are above ground if you have not had your irrigation system winterized to prevent damage. A thick blanket or a tarp should prevent freezing and therefore possible damage. You don't want to wrap the backflow device with the blanket, but rather make a tent over it. The covering MUST touch the ground all the way around the device to keep warm air from the ground inside to prevent freezing.

Be sure to regularly sharpen your mower blades! A good, sharp cut is good for the health of the grass blades as well as the appearance. Frayed grass tips may open up opportunity for other health issues in your grass since it delays the tip's ability to heal. Knowing when to sharpen mower blades depends on several factors, including the type of lawn you are mowing (well-maintained or more weeds than grass), the type of mower you use (push mower or riding mower) and how much area you mow (small town lawn or large country yard).

"Every job is composed of many small details, any one of which, if overlooked, can create big problems later." Napoleon Hill

"When you take care of the ounces, the pounds take care of themselves." Jerry Pankratz

"The difference between something good and something great is attention to detail." Charles R. Swindoll

Details are important at Turf Solutions! Most people will never see inside of a valve box, but here you can see two different height valves being installed during construction on the same mainline. Even though the valves are significantly different in height, care was taken to be sure they are exactly level with each other. When a person is picky about every small detail, the big problems "take care of themselves", or, just never seem to show up!

A customer needed a new pipe installed between two existing sprinkler heads on their football field. We were able to make the repair and leave it looking like we had never even been there. In a little over an hour after we finished up, the customer hosted a game on that very field! At Turf Solutions, it's important to us to put your field back to the condition it was before and prevent settling in the future, otherwise the repair continues to cost the customer time and money. Do it once and do it right.

How awesome is this?! Major props to the groundskeeper!

Incredible!

"Just wanted to send in this picture from Northeast High School in Goose Lake, IA. The groundskeeper Shaun Eberhart (AKA, The Sod Father) does absolutely amazing work and went above and beyond for Northeast’s “Salute to Service” game. So much talent that Northeast’s groundskeeper has!"

If you remember the football field that we sprigged on June 30th (we posted about it July 10th), take a look at these photos of its growth progression. Even though we as humans didn't enjoy the 2 weeks of 100+ degree weather, the bermuda loved it! The first photo is from July 20th and the second is August 3rd - 2 weeks apart! The third photo is from today, August 10th - 1 week later!

Tis the season for sprigging Bermuda grass! This is a football field that we sprigged this summer. Sprigging takes a roll of sod and chops it into small pieces which are then pushed into the ground and “planted.” This is a more economical way to establish Bermuda grass if you have time to establish it. Sprigging usually uses 20% of the amount of sod to cover the same area than if it were to be sodded. Since Bermuda thrives in the heat, the best time to sprig is during the hot weather so that it can establish quickly. It is critical to keep the new sprigs well watered for the first 2 weeks after sprigging while the new plants are getting established. As you can see in the video, we are running the sprinklers in an already sprigged area. Depending on weather, in about 10-12 weeks time, this field will be completely filled in and ready for action!
