While synthetic turf is “low maintenance," it isn’t “no maintenance." Synthetic turf, at its most basic, is outdoor carpet with infill. Just like your indoor carpet at home needs to have dirt and debris removed for it to look its best and last longer, so does your synthetic turf. Our grooming machine, in one pass, de-compacts, cleans, and stands up matted fibers in your field. The machine takes the top layer of infill into the machine, removes broken fibers, trash, and other debris and returns the infill back to the field. It is the only machine that uses a vacuum to remove dust, crushed leaves, and hair from the field. We can also apply disinfectant on the field as well. Call today to discuss ways to make your synthetic field safe, looking great, and long-lasting!

Looking at this photo, what do you think caused the grass to appear this way?

Dull mower blades is the answer. While this is a very extreme example, it is very important to mow with sharp mower blades for appearance purposes as well as for the health of the grass. Frayed grass tips may open up opportunity for other health issues in your grass since it delays the tip's ability to heal. Knowing when to sharpen mower blades depends on several factors, including the type of turf you are mowing (well-maintained or more weeds than grass), the type of mower you use (reel mower, riding mower, or push mower) and how much area you mow. Keep an eye on your grass and remember to regularly have your mower blades sharpened.

On June 3, we sprigged bermuda grass into existing bermuda practice fields that were experiencing some wear and bare areas. The first photo was taken on June 11 - 8 days after sprigging. With the hot temperatures of June and a good amount of moisture, the sprigs took off and are filling in very nicely as shown in the second photo, taken July 6. With proper maintenance, these fields will be ready for athletes to use again in August. Turf maintenance is all about doing the right thing at the right time.

We recently sprigged bermuda grass practice fields. Sprigging is the process of taking a roll of sod and shredding it into small pieces, or sprigs, and planting them into the ground. Each of these sprigs becomes an individual plant. With proper watering, after several weeks these plants grow and fill in bare areas due to winterkill or heavy traffic from athletes. Sprigging uses about 1/5 of the sod that would be used if you were to sod the area. Proper planning can save you money and provide excellent results. Give us a call if you need to grow in some bare areas, are considering a renovation or new field project.

Here we are aerating a bermuda grass football practice field. This core aerator pulls plugs which are 5/8" in diameter and 4" deep out of the field. These plugs are 2.5" apart in all directions. Top dressing is typically the next step in this process (see our previous post), in which we spread a thin layer of sand across the field, filling the holes with sand. This helps relieve compaction as well as speed the filtration of water and nutrients.
