On March 8, 1836, Colonel James W. Fannin raised the iconic Troutman Flag at Goliad to celebrate Texas's newly declared independence. Designed by Joanna Troutman and brought to Texas by the Georgia Battalion, the white silk banner featured a blue five-pointed star and the defiant motto "Liberty or Death." This moment served as a powerful symbol of the volunteers' commitment to the cause, marking one of the earliest appearances of a "Lone Star" over the fledgling republic just weeks before the tragic events of the Goliad Massacre.
