🚰 What's Actually Inside Your Drains?

Your drains have seen some things...
Every time you wash your hands, take a shower, rinse off dinner dishes, or brush your teeth, a little bit of "stuff" goes down the drain. Most of it belongs there... some of it absolutely does not. Your plumbing keeps score.

🧼 Soap
It starts out as bubbles and good intentions. Over time, soap can leave behind a stubborn residue that sticks to the inside of your pipes. Add a little hair or grease to the mix, and suddenly your drain has the perfect recipe for a clog.

💇 Hair
Hair is basically the overachiever of drain clogs. It grabs onto soap, wraps around itself, and creates little plumbing tumbleweeds that don't seem possible until you're standing ankle deep in shower water wondering where it all went wrong.

🥓 Grease
It may look harmless when it's warm and liquid, but once it cools, grease hardens and sticks to the inside of your pipes like glue. Then it starts collecting everything else that comes down the drain.
Think of it as your pipes slowly building their own cholesterol.🥓

☕ Coffee Grounds
Coffee grounds don't dissolve in water. They settle, clump together, and love finding places to collect inside your plumbing.
Great for your compost pile. Not so great for your kitchen sink.

🍚 The "It's Probably Fine" Collection
Rice that keeps expanding.
Pasta that somehow doubles in size.
Eggshells.
Flour.
Produce stickers.
Paper towels.
"Flushable" wipes (they're not as flushable as you'd hope).

🏡 The Biggest Homeowner Myths We Hear

If you've owned a home for any length of time, you've probably heard a few pieces of advice that get passed from neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend, in ads, or generation to generation. The funny thing is... some of those "tips" can end up costing homeowners hundreds, or even thousands of dollars.

Let's bust a few of the biggest myths we hear all the time.

🚽 "Flushable wipes are flushable."

Despite what the package says, most "flushable" wipes don't break down the way toilet paper does. They can clog pipes, create backups, and contribute to massive sewer blockages.
The safest place for them? The trash can. 🗑️

🔥 "Hot water melts grease, so it's fine to pour it down the drain."

It might seem like the grease disappears while the water is hot... but as it travels through your plumbing, it cools and hardens. Over time, that grease sticks to the inside of your pipes and traps food particles, eventually creating stubborn clogs that no homeowner wants to deal with.
A better option? Let grease cool, then scrape it into the trash. 👍

💧 "If it drains, it's fine."

Not always. A sink that drains slowly, a shower that gurgles, or a toilet that needs two flushes may all be early warning signs that something is building up inside your plumbing.

The Home Maintenance Calendar Nobody Asked For (But Every Minnesota Home Needs)

Living in Minnesota means your home works overtime.

One month it's battling subzero temperatures. A few months later it's handling heavy spring rains. Before you know it, summer heat rolls in, followed by another long winter. Every season asks something different of your home, and a little preventative maintenance can make a huge difference.

Here's a simple month-by-month guide to staying ahead of the seasons.

❄️January
The coldest days of the year are here. Keep an eye on your furnace, replace a dirty filter if needed, and check for icy spots or drafts around doors and windows. If your home has pipes along exterior walls, make sure they're staying warm.

🧊 February
Take a walk around your home and look for ice, excessive icicles, or signs of melting around the roofline. Inside, listen for unusual furnace noises and make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

🌧️ March
Spring is around the corner. Test your sump pump before the snow starts melting in full force. Check for signs of leaks around your water heater and look for any plumbing issues that winter may have hidden.

🌷 April
Snowmelt and spring rain can put your drainage system to work. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear, inspect outdoor faucets for freeze damage, and keep an eye on your basement after heavy rain.
