What’s it like to be our customer? Week 1: Clear explanations & expectations.
I wear an AI recording device at work to help keep track of job details, customer requests, and follow-ups. Recently, I asked it:
“Based on the conversations you’ve reviewed, what can customers expect when they work with me and Max at Red Fox Plumbing?”
Here’s its response:
“Across the customer conversations I reviewed, one of Red Fox Plumbing’s strongest qualities is the effort to help people understand what happens next.
Shane regularly explains what he has found, why he recommends a particular approach, and what the alternatives involve. The emphasis is on giving the customer enough information to make a decision.
That includes being open about uncertainty. When a part needs research, a condition needs further investigation, or another trade needs to be involved, he generally explains that instead of presenting an assumption as a settled answer.
Scheduling conversations show a similar approach. He acknowledges the limits of a small team, explains when a return visit may be necessary, and has recommended finding someone available sooner when a customer’s problem might not reasonably wait.
For someone hiring Shane and Max, those habits can make the process easier to follow: what can be done now, what needs to happen first, and what could change the plan.
There is room for improvement. Shane sometimes repeats an explanation or gives more technical detail than the customer needs. Leading with the recommendation, then asking how much detail they want, would make that strength more effective.
Most of the detailed customer explanations in this sample came from Shane, so the evidence supports a firmer assessment of his communication than Max’s individually. Together, their service visits generally come across as personable and practical, with room for questions and ordinary conversation.
My assessment is that customers can reasonably expect honest explanations, realistic limits, and an effort to keep them informed. That is an interpretation of the conversations reviewed; customers’ own feedback remains the best test of how the experience actually felt.”
