As designers, we work hand in hand with our clients to synthesize their own sense of taste, using our expertise to guide and suggest, but never to override. Our goal is that every home we create perfectly suits its owners. It's their home after all!

But what about our own house? One of the hardest things about working in an industry where you see all kinds of gorgeous homes and finishes in various styles, is finding your own personal style. Every style has merit and everything is beautiful when it's new!

When designing and building our own home, we looked for experiences and buildings that resonated with each of us. We both love a long ranch house, and Angi had fond memories of the connected farmhouses of Maine. Happily marrying both worked well for our style and our property!

Little details like the exposed rafter tails, raw cedar shake and metal roofs carry through from end to end, creating repetition and cohesiveness across the facade.

And no PCW house would be complete without something fun - at our house it's a bridge connecting the main house to the garage. Definitely a favorite of visitors - and our own kids!

From rough sketches to reality - when you work with us, we're with you each step of the way.

Every element of this fireplace wall started as a spark of inspiration from the homeowners. Together we developed those ideas into this design, which was then built and completed by our excellent craftspeople.

And that mantle piece? Custom milled from a tree on the owners' property. It's details like this that mean so much!

1. The homeowners loved the look of random height nickel gap wood running horizontally - except that's not available to buy. So Mark made it on site, to their specifications. Love the way it wraps the fireplace surround and lines the back of the bookcases!

2. Installing the cherished mantle piece.

3. The finished look - ready for the family to gather round.

4. The White Oak mantle piece was custom milled for this purpose. The old tree sat too close to the existing home and needed to come down - we were all pretty sad until it came down and we discovered it was dead inside. Grateful for the shade it gave and for the lumber created from it!

5. A herringbone inlay of varying width hardwood for the hearth? We can do that! (Mark loves a challenge!)

When designing a home for an older, well established neighborhood, it felt important that the home we place there not feel out of place. Not too big, not too small. We kept the road elevation modest (incorporating the clean lines the homeowners enjoy) and loaded the lake side with glass and porches. Every day a little more detail is added to this sleek custom home we designed and built - understated elegance at its finest!

When it comes to decks - we like to ensure the framing isn't visible from living areas or anywhere it might distract from the overall beauty of the home.

We treated this challenge in two different ways here: on the balcony, we fully finished the underside of the deck, so the view from the lower level family room wouldn't be marred by raw deck framing. It also creates a nice nook feeling out on the patio.

Under the generous screened porch, the family wanted a place to store all of their fun lake toys during the summer months so they were out of sight but still close at hand. We worked with them to design this slatted privacy screen which allows for ventilation while still obscuring the storage area. The horizontal lines here will be carried through by horizontal cable railing at the balcony.

Revisiting the Carriage House Project

For a Chicago-based family, lake life in West Michigan deserved more than just an addition, it called for a space as timeless and welcoming as their main cottage. Carefully planned and constructed to maximize function, the Carriage House blends seamlessly with its surroundings and serves as a secondary living space.

The kitchen blends classic charm with everyday function: custom green cabinetry (built in house), vintage-inspired appliances, open shelving with curated details, and a farm-style table ready for family dinners or morning coffee. Hidden laundry keeps the room uncluttered, while the design feels as though it’s been part of the property for generations.

It's all about the details here at PCW! Our clients asked for random width nickel gap detailing on the hearth and bookcases. That's not available commercially, so we made it ourselves! Can't wait to see the finished result - including the mantlepiece made from a White Oak tree found on the property.
