On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered the I Have a Dream speech. What often gets left out of that story: the full name of that event was the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Economic justice was never separate from civil rights in Dr. King’s eyes. He stood shoulder to shoulder with labor unions because he understood that dignity on the job and equality in this country were the same fight.

Five years later he was in Memphis, standing with striking sanitation workers, when his life was cut short.

The labor movement remembers where he stood. Today we remember it too.

Being a member of Local 540 means something. It means you trained for it. It means you earned it. It means when you show up on a job, you bring skill nobody can question and a standard nobody can cut corners on.

It means your wages are real, your benefits are real, and your retirement is real, because generations of IBEW brothers and sisters fought to make it that way. You didn’t inherit a job. You inherited a legacy.

So wear it. Say it loud. Tell people where you learned your trade and who’s got your back.
