Scott is removing some Poison Ivy today. Please wish him luck not getting it on his skin!
If you decide to do this yourself at home:
1. Wear long gloves and pants.
2. Duct tape your gloves and your pant legs to seal off your skin from the environment.
3. Pull ivy from the root, carefully and gently.
4. Hardest part - Don't wipe the sweat off your face and get poison ivy oil on your skin!
5. Throw away the vines in the trash (not with other yard debris, and never compost it). Also don't burn it, it'll get the plant parts in the air causing you and your whole neighborhood to inhale it.
6. Cover the area with wood chips. These do not feed the soil, but they will keep the light off it and help prevent any leftover parts from growing back.
Did you know, you may not have a reaction to Urushiol (the allergenic oil from poison ivy) the first time you come into contact with poison ivy, or you may have a weak reaction - but the reaction gets stronger and stronger after each exposure, as your body mounts a stronger and stronger immune response to it.
