Towels, pool floats, goggles, sunscreen, toys, drinks and wet shoes all need somewhere to go. Before your backyard is finished, think about where those things will live and how people will move between the house and pool.

A bigger pool doesn’t automatically mean a deeper pool is better. Think about how your family will actually use the water. Will most of the time be spent relaxing, floating and playing? Do you want an area where adults can comfortably stand? Will kids be using the pool regularly?

Pool depth affects the way a pool feels and functions just as much as its overall size. When comparing fiberglass pool options, don’t just look at the shape from above. Look at the depth profile too.

Fall leaves are beautiful. At the bottom of your pool? Not so much.

As leaves begin falling across East Tennessee, pool care changes a little too. Skimmer baskets can fill faster, leaves left in the water can sink and begin breaking down, and all that extra organic debris can affect your water chemistry.

When you’re planning a pool, don’t only stand in the backyard and decide where it looks best. Go inside. Look through the kitchen window. Stand at the back door. Sit where you normally have your morning coffee. Look out from the living room.

Your pool becomes part of the view from inside your home, too. Good pool placement considers how the backyard looks when you’re using it AND when you’re looking at it. That’s one of the reasons planning the entire outdoor space matters before excavation begins.

Most people start thinking seriously about a pool when the first hot weekend arrives. But fall is actually a great time to start planning.

When you begin earlier, you have more time to think through the pool model, placement, patio space, landscaping, access to the backyard, and all of the other decisions that determine how the finished space will work.

You also get to spend the winter looking forward to something a lot more exciting than cold weather. If a new backyard is on your list for 2027, you don’t have to wait until spring to start the conversation.

Bigger isn't automatically better when it comes to choosing a pool. The right size depends on your property and, more importantly, how you plan to use it.

A family that wants plenty of room for kids to swim may have different priorities than homeowners who picture relaxing by the water and entertaining friends. Choosing a pool that fits the backyard can also leave more room for the patio, landscaping, seating, and other outdoor features you'll use just as much as the pool itself.

The goal isn't to fit the biggest pool possible into your yard. It's to create the backyard that works best for you.

A great backyard isn't necessarily the one with the most features. It's the one where everything works together.

Before adding a pool, think about where people will sit, where you'll eat, how you'll move between the house and pool, where you may want shade, and how much open space you'd like to keep. Planning those areas together can make the finished backyard feel intentional instead of pieced together over time.

When temperatures start dropping, a new pool probably isn’t the first thing on your mind. But if you’d love to be enjoying one when warm weather returns, this is exactly when it makes sense to start thinking about it.

Planning early gives you time to consider the pool itself, placement, patio space, landscaping, lighting, and any other outdoor living features you want to incorporate. It also gives you time to make decisions without feeling rushed once everyone starts thinking about their backyards again in the spring.

Summer may be ending, but pool planning doesn’t have to. If next summer’s backyard looks different in your head, Foothills Outdoor Designs would love to help you start planning it.
