π’ Tick Season Alert for Cape Cod
If it feels like ticks are worse than usual this year β you're not wrong. Emergency department visits for tick bites are running at nearly triple the typical rate for this time of year nationally, and the Northeast is bearing the brunt of it.
Here's how to protect yourself this season:
β
Use EPA-registered repellents (DEET, picaridin, or permethrin on clothing)
β
Stick to the center of trails and avoid tall grass and brush
β
Do a full-body tick check after being outdoors β don't forget behind the knees, underarms, and hairline
β
Check your pets too!
β
Shower within 2 hours of coming indoors
β
If you find a tick, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers
β οΈ A reminder: nymphs (young ticks) are the size of a poppy seed β easy to miss!
The main concern is Lyme disease, carried by black-legged ticks. Lone star ticks and dog ticks are also active and can carry other illnesses, including alpha-gal syndrome.
Stay safe out there, Cape Cod. πΏ
