Some of you may be wondering why municipalities are pushing for the installation of backflow preventers? The reason is quite simple. These devices prevent waste water from backing up into the municipal water system. Waste water in the municipal water system can cause many issues, not the least of which is illness from bacteria found in the waste water. This can be disastrous.

The 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, officially called the Century of Progress, became one of the first major documented cases of a serious backflow disaster. The Fair drew massive crowds to a city whose water mains and sewage systems were grossly undersized and poorly designed for the influx of visitors.

Two of the main hotels — the Chicago Hotel and the Roosevelt Hotel — shared a water supply with insufficient cross-connection protection. A cooling tank used to make ice cubes for the hotels was connected to a sewer line via a plug and an electric motor pump. This created a cross-connection that allowed contaminated water to backflow into the potable supply. This contamination led to nearly 100 documented deaths, with many more likely unreported.

While this was a terrible tragedy, it led to some of the first plumbing codes as well as public health research. Today, because of what was learned as a result of this event and others like it, plumbing is much safer and sanitary.

While nobody wants to incur the costs associated with installing and maintaining a backflow preventer, understand that it is for the health benefits of both your own home or business, as well as the entire community the water system serves.
