Rabbit-eye blueberries are native to Georgia and grow exceptionally well here, but there are two crucial things you need to know to ensure bountiful harvests.
First, blueberries thrive in acidic soil. Being native to Georgia’s pine forests, they prefer a pH range of 4.5 to 5.5. This acidity allows them to absorb the nutrients they need to grow and produce fruit. Without properly acidifying your soil, your blueberries could struggle or fail to thrive.
Second, understanding the crown and cane structure of blueberries is key. Blueberries grow from a crown (their base in the ground), which sends up canes that form the bush’s structure. The productivity of these canes depends on their age—canes are most productive when they’re 3 to 6 years old. To maintain great harvests, it’s essential to prune out older, unproductive canes and encourage new ones to grow. Regular pruning is the secret to keeping your blueberry plants healthy and productive.
