We get this call and email a lot in the first week or two of November....What's is going on with my trees!? Many evergreens "slough" interior fronds this time of year. Especially noticeable on Emerald Green Arborvitae, Green Giant Arborvitae, American Pillar Arborvitae and White Pines. This is part of their growth pattern and nothing to be concerned about.

Main road just outside your side yard fence? Screen with Green Giant Arborvitae. These trees are more tightly pyramidal than the other large screening Leyland Cypress and Japanese Cedars that we also use. As a bonus, the narrower shape keeps them from invading the power lines. Below before and after shows ten foot tall Green Giants installed on nine foot centers. This will be a twenty foot tall solid screen in three years. Yes, there is an accent Deodar Cedar forward at the end of the line to add a bright blue color and a different shape into the mix.

Most people think of Dogwoods as a sign of spring flowering in April/May. These are two Chinese Evergreen Dogwoods taken in late June in the 100 degree heat. These bloom much later. One in a front yard full sun lawn with no mulch and cooking all day and one in a shade garden well taken care of with dappled sun and nicely mulched. Great looking trees and tough once established.

And now it's May! Spring flush brings out the beauty of the American Pillar Arborvitae as a narrow screening tree. Yes there is a trampoline right behind them.

Spring planting season starts now! It is cold today. 18 this morning in Marietta! A good time to show what many evergreens look like at the end of our winter. The below photos are the same 4 trees. Although taken over three years apart, they are also take during different times of the year. First photo taken in October at the end of summer and second photo taken in February at the end of Winter here in the south. Cold weather will "bronze" many of our evergreens. Nothing at all wrong with these trees. They will be bright green and flushed with new growth once we get to April.

Another thing we see more than we should. First photo below shows a tall mature Green Giant Arborvitae. The tree is brown at the midpoint to the top. The culprit is the strapping (see the second photo inside the same tree showing the trunk at the same midpoint). Arbortie and Muletie are common materials used to stake trees by landscapers. If these straps are knotted too tightly or left on they will "girdle" the tree. This compromises the cambium layer's ability to pass nutrients up from the root system and the tree dies above the dead cambium layer. Once trees have reached the point that damage can be seen, it is too late. All strapping for any tree that is staked should be removed within one growing season after install. This is a completely preventable problem.

Whenever you start to see pine trees losing needles..., have them inspected by someone who can identify pine beetles as the culprit. This neighborhood in Paulding County outside metro Atlanta has lost thousands of trees. Once the beetles start spreading they can get out of control quickly. This crazy amount of tree loss happened in just a few weeks.

Coldest night in metro Atlanta this year coming this evening. Anyone with drip system timers should bring them inside. Also, winterize spigots by closing off inside shut offs to keep pipes from freezing. Garden hoses left out with water in them can freeze and split.
A couple days of sun after these next few cold nights will still be good planting weather for trees. Stay warm.

Now is a great time of year to install trees. As long as ground temperatures are over 40 degrees, there is new root growth. Best to plant this time of year so roots start to develop without any real active foliage growth occurring. All energy is concentrated on generating new roots. That way the trees are ready to take off come spring. An additional benefit, watering requirements are much less. This is a center group of Green Giant Arborvitae and groups of Chindo Viburnums on each end. Taller maturing in the middle with a different leaf texture and smaller maturing on each end (can't see the three Chindos to the left...blame it on the photographer!)

Not a drop of rain the entire month of October so far in the Atlanta area. This time of year is still hot and dry. Do not forget to water any newly installed landscape plants. All that planting done this past spring still needs supplemental water before most things go to sleep here in a month or so.

Emerald Green Arborvitae. You see these on either side of front door and on corners of houses where narrow height is needed. Only two trees in this photo. Your internet search will show tons of information that these trees grow to a "maximum" height of fifteen feet tall and three feet wide. Like most information on line, not really the whole story. Trees continue to grow after they reach their "maximum" height. Plants do not have an off switch. Emeralds need a trim and a tie up from time to time or they get out of control.

Want your new home courtyard to have privacy when you have a narrow space. American Pillar Arborvitae is the way to go. Fast growing and narrow maturing is a rare combination.
