What do native plants even do? They support native wildlife. That starts with the smallest bugs to radiate vast amounts of energy infinitely outward into larger beings. I recently got a microscope camera from to peek a little closer into the tiny world of flowers and insects. 1. Creeping phlox bloom 2. Aphid farmers in hydrangea 3. Emerging yarrow blossom 4. Unknown 5. Unknown 6. Clover petal 7. More aphid farmers

A tale of two walls…let’s peek at a recent project we installed in Atlanta, Georgia. The clients’ had existing retaining walls that needed to be brought to the next level. We brought in another 7,000 pounds of stone to create three proper terraces!! This allowed them to park their cars and safely unload in the newly extended slate chip path. They can now easily reach each terrace from the one beneath it. This is a yard that invites one to interact. We’ve removed some sneaky invasive while seeding a blend of nine different native pollinator plants. A smart watering rain barrel keeps it all thriving during dry spells. This yard truly rocks! 🪨

We had the pleasure to listen in on a talk from Doug Tallamy diving into native plants and ecology. He’s written the groundbreaking book Bringing Nature Home and three others on the subject of rebuilding whole food webs starting with native plants. His vision for a “homegrown national park” is gaining new acreage every single day. What a force! His research has been a primer for so many people. Thanks also to Trees Atlanta for hosting the event!

Winter is a great time to tackle some invasive species management. Evergreen Chinese privet stands out easily against the bone grey of winter here in Georgia. There’s no other way I’d prefer than using heavy duty nylon webbing straps and my truck in 4 wheel drive. Nothing beats that satisfying crunch. Before attempting to pull a shrub it is imperative you identify your utility lines and sever the roots on the opposite side of the pull. Now that all this is done we have space to plant two new native garden beds!

Have I finally solved the crisis of exploding irrigation timers?! After testing this Frost King pipe warmer unit over the last two frosts, the results look promising. We’re still watering with our timers not exploding…yet! Stay tuned to find out if they can sustain even colder temps!

Look who came to visit! such a treat to see larger predator species in our garden. We’ve witnessed spent egg cases around here and there but this is easily the biggest one we’ve seen so far.

We posted some stump ripping recently but some species don’t take kindly to rippin’ sweet gum trees being among them. They have vigorous tap roots that resist pulling quite effectively. We used epsom salt to effectively dehydrate this stump so it doesn’t resprout. 1/2” dowels are used to cap the salt filled holes, preventing dilution. A garbage bag is placed over the top once complete, preventing excess moisture from reaching the top of the stump. Let us know what you think of our method!
