Interviewer: Have you ever actually eaten Spam?

Tim Curry: I have! I actually even rather like it.

I: Really?

TC: Well, you know ... I grew up in postwar Britain, when you were lucky to get anything to eat. People in America have absolutely no conception of how austere England was after the war. While you were all sort of eating butter and eggs, we were eating rabbit. That's what there was in the butcher shop. I remember candy rationing until I was like 7. Spam was almost luxury time ... whatever it is. I always liked it, probably because it's so heavily seasoned. [He laughs.] Kids will eat anything, won't they?

"I remember being amazed by his extraordinary singing voice - it was just completely perfect, just something he was born with - it came ready made. We would go to university parties and end up having a drink and whatever and he would break out into song, this marvellous bluesy voice. You know you leave school feeling rather spotty and inadequate but he wasn't like that - he was rather marvellous, very assured. He was really good fun as well." - Patrick Barlow discusses knowing Tim during their time as housemates at Birmingham University in the late 60s.

Let spooky season begin 😍🎃
“It was a very cold night and Diana Rigg, who I worship, who played the headmistress of the witches school, had a bottle of sloe gin under her habit. Which made us very much warmer - but not very concentrated. In fact, so unconcentrated and so grimly unprofessional that they decided to reshoot it in London in the studio. I was stunned - I thought that I’d brought it off beautifully. But hurray for gin!” - Tim Curry

‘Until the late '70's, the English TV public thought that I was American. I played a New Yorker before I'd ever been to New York. I've been out listening to voices as we travel the States. I hope it'll be useful as far as the movies go, because I'd eventually like to do the kind of character stuff that Peter Sellers and Alec Guinness were able to do, which is the hardest kind of comedy.’ - Tim Curry

‘It’s just great fun with someone like Richelieu, with such a Machiavellian brain. You almost have to like a character who embraces evil with that kind of gusto. I do like to paddle around in the corners of the human mind that tend to be more dangerous.’

“I’m very aware that I’m lucky,” he says. “I’m astonished actually at how ambitious I’ve been. I didn’t think of myself as ambitious at all.”

Comedy has been important for him as a performer. But more recently it’s become a “coping mechanism”, too. In 2012, at 67, he had a severe stroke, leaving his left side paralysed. He is grateful that he didn’t lose his speech. Making other people laugh is clearly a thrill for him – his conversation is full of cutting remarks, punchlines and exemplary voice work. How did his stroke change his outlook on life? “The day before I had the stroke, I smoked three packs of Marlboro Reds,” he says. “I won’t be doing that again!”

Between the stroke and the pandemic, Curry had what he describes as “an appalling amount of time to reflect”. Vagabond is the result, a witty page-turner, full of life. Come for the career, stay for the celebrity encounters: impromptu dinners with David Bowie after stage performances of The Rocky Horror Show; working through bowls of co***ne at Studio 54 with Truman Capote and Andy Warhol (Carly Simon, also present, did not partake); and a hilariously catty encounter with Donald Trump on the set of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (we’ll get to that, don’t worry).

“By all accounts (mathematically confirmed) I was conceived in South Africa, which bears no relevance to my life other than to add to the tally of countries my parents referred to as “home.” My mother and father met in Malta, my older sister, Judy, was born in Port Said (near Cairo), and I was born in Grappenhall, a village in Cheshire, England, on April 19, 1946.
Within a year of my birth, we had moved again, this time to Hong Kong. While there, significantly before I had the capacity to protest, my mother took me to a commercial photographer, who submitted my image to a newspaper competition for the “Most Beautiful Baby in Hong Kong.”
I was rather cherubic at the time, with blond, wavy hair and inordinately large, blue eyes. I must have appealed to enough of the people who would vote for such a wretched contest, because I won. My mother later told me, without the slightest uptick of enthusiasm, of this ghastly honor that had been bestowed upon me. There was no reward.” - Tim Curry in
