Getting your trees ready for winter?

The most preventable landscape loss in America, and almost nobody does it until after they've lost a tree.

THE THREE THREATS: VOLES — chew bark at and below ground level and under snow cover, where you can't see the damage until spring. They're active all winter under snow. RABBITS — chew bark and clip twigs, typically up to about 2 feet, or higher on packed snow. Damage is a clean 45-degree cut. DEER — bucks rub antlers on saplings in fall (September-November), shredding bark. Deer also browse twigs.

WHY GIRDLING KILLS: The phloem layer just under the bark transports sugars from leaves to roots. A complete ring of removed bark severs that transport. The roots starve. The tree usually leafs out in spring, then declines and dies through summer. People blame drought. It was the rabbit.

THE PROTECTION: HARDWARE CLOTH — 1/4-inch mesh cylinder, 2-3 feet tall, buried 2-3 inches into the soil, held a few inches away from the trunk. The best protection against voles and rabbits. SPIRAL PLASTIC GUARDS — cheap and easy, but must be removed each spring; they trap moisture and harbor insects if left on year-round. CORRUGATED DRAIN PIPE — split lengthwise, wrapped around the trunk. Cheap and effective against deer rubs. TREE TUBES for new plantings.

ALSO IMPORTANT: Pull mulch back from trunks. Deep trunk mulch is prime vole habitat. Keep grass and weeds cleared around young trunks.

TIMING: Install now. Remove in spring.

So it's been a cool October, let's see what free February is like! 🍂🎃✨

We just turned the page to October, and the old-timers had a rule for this month.

Warm October, cold February. If the month runs mild and summery, you'll pay for it in the dead of winter. And the flip side: if October comes in with hard frosts and wind, January and February will go easy on you. It shows up in the Farmers' Almanac's October lore, along with a long line of sayings that try to read the winter from the fall.

It isn't science, and the Almanac itself says sayings like this hold up about as well as a coin flip in any single year.

But it's a good one to keep. Write down how this October goes, warm or cold, and we'll settle it together in February.
