An open yard with no boundary means the lawn takes a beating from anyone and anything that wanders through, dogs included. We framed this one out with a wood and wire fence and fresh sod behind it, so there's an actual line between the yard and the street. Simple fix, but it changes how the whole space gets used. Nobody posts pictures of the gravel base, but it's the part that decides whether a patio or wall is still doing its job in fifteen years. This is what it looks like before any of the pavers go down — base compacted in lifts, wall block set course by course, drainage figured out before it's covered up. A worn dirt path to the front door isn't much to look at, and it turns to mud every time it rains. We swapped this one for a paver walkway and steps, set on a proper base so it drains instead of pooling. It curves with the yard instead of cutting through it, and it's going to look the same in year ten as it does today.
