Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer is a green buprestid or jewel beetle native to north-eastern Asia that feeds on ash species. Females lay eggs in bark crevices on ash trees, and larvae feed underneath the bark of ash trees to emerge as adults in one to two years.

The attached 2 photos show damage to the ash trees caused by woodpeckers attempting to get to the Emerald ash borer larvae and pupae located just inside the outer bark of the trees.This is called "Blonding."

The last photo shows what the exposed trunk or limbs would look like if we removed the outer bark. The ash borer larvae have been feeding on the inner phloem, cambium and outer xylem.

If caught early enough EAB injections have a 90% success rate of saving the trees. It’s essential to have a trained tree technician or certified arborist evaluate your ash trees.
