Today let's talk about re-skinning your deck vs. re-framing. We generally always re-frame. Why? More often than not when we remove all the deck boards, we find an improperly flashed ledger causing rotted wall sheathing, or posts rotted just below the ground, beams or the tops of the posts to be deteriorated. The tops of the joists usually have a crack up the center of them where all the deck boards were fastened. Many times the joists and/or beam are undersized and over spanned for current code requirements and existing joists are sagging between the house and the beam. We use products that will far outlast an old deck frame so why leave the old framing as the weakest link?

Our latest project is a 14' x 12' deck with Deckorators Voyage decking in Khaya and Digger Specialties Westbury railings in Textured Black, with 3" posts. We had a bit of wall rot on this one as the previous deck flashing had not been done properly. We were able to save the footings and posts to save the clients some money but we did re- frame everything else with ProWood True Frame lumber.

We just finished this beautiful 16' x 12' deck with a 4' x 4' landing and stairs featuring GoliathTech MN helical piles, Deckorators Summit collection decking, and Digger Specialties Westbury c10 railings.

We are excited to announce that we are now offering helical pile foundations as part of our standard building practice.They are a great alternative to traditional concrete footings for our deck and covered deck/porch projects. These provide far superior frost protection as they are installed to a depth of 7' compared to 4', so we are well below frost depth. The 6x6 posts are able to sit a bit off of the ground so they are not nearly as susceptible to rot as posts installed below grade.

As it warms up outside, we start to get back to enjoying our decks and other outdoor spaces. Spring is the time to give your deck a full inspection. Here's a list of things that should be inspected.

Are the support posts starting to rot just below grade?

Are the stair stringers solid or have damage?

Is the stair connection to the deck failing or pulling away?

Is water getting behind the ledger at the house?

Are the beams and joists starting to show signs of rot?

Is the railing solid or loose?

Are the deck boards solid, especially at any seams are they starting to get soft?
