This is the part of a closing most people never see.

Before the cover ever goes on, we blow air through the lines to push the water out. Then the lines get plugged and protected with antifreeze for the winter. It's loud and messy, but it's one of the most important parts of the job.

Those lines run underground, where you can't easily get to them. Any water left behind is water that can freeze.

How you close your pool is how you'll find it in the spring.

A proper closing takes more than throwing a cover on. We blow air through the lines to clear out any leftover water, then add antifreeze to the lines. Step rails and ladders come out. We also add closing chemicals to help protect the water through the winter. The last step is securing the cover.

Water like this is the goal. A good closing keeps you a lot closer to it come spring.

It's a good thing when your work still makes you smile.

Plenty of days are long and hard. The sun's hot, the job's tougher than it looked, and there's always one more thing to fix. But there's a lot to love about this line of work, too.

You get to be outside. You get to work alongside good people. You get welcomed into backyards by folks who trust you with their pool. And every so often, the job hands you something you didn't see coming, like a frog this size, and you can't help but grin.

Ice in your pump is a spring problem you don't want.
