National Dog Day was yesterday. Nobody told Sully, so we're celebrating today.

Officially, he's the Pool Girl's office assistant. Unofficially, his favorite part of the job is the ride in the van.

These two turned up while we were getting the pool ready. We caught them, said hello, and set them back on their way.

The work itself is careful business. Getting a pool prepped right is what makes a new liner sit clean and last. But every now and then, the job hands you a good excuse to smile.

An automatic cover is one of the nicest things you can add to a pool. One button, and it opens or closes.

What you don't see is where all the work happens. The system sits down in a trough beside the pool, out of sight under the deck.

Here's a look inside one. This is the part that keeps the whole thing running.

There's something oddly satisfying about watching a pool get stripped back to nothing.

Before anything new goes in, the old has to come out — and this is what that looks like. Old liner pulled, the pile of leaves hauled out, the leftover water and muck at the bottom dealt with. In the timelapse it flies by. In person, it's the dirty, hands-on work nobody pictures when they imagine a "new pool."

You'll also catch the new steps getting test-fit in here — checking placement before anything's set for good.

A new liner is only as good as what's behind it.

Before a single inch of liner goes in, the walls have to be right. That means getting in there and repairing, smoothing, and prepping the wall surfaces so there's a solid, even base for the new liner to sit against. Skip it, and every flaw underneath eventually shows through — or worse, works against the liner over time.

This is that stage: the crew prepping the walls before the new liner goes in. It's not the part anyone photographs when it's finished, but it's a big part of why a finished pool looks and holds up the way it should.

Some of the best moments on a job aren't the work at all.

Sometimes it's family swinging by just to say hi and drop off a couple cold drinks. And there's nothing like something cold showing up right when you need it.

It doesn't take much. A quick visit, a minute to catch your breath before getting back to it. But those little check-ins are the ones that stick with you long after the pool's finished.

We're lucky to have people who show up like this. Hope your Sunday's got a few of them, too.
