Q: How big does hail actually need to be to damage my roof?

We hear this question after almost every North Texas storm.

A: Smaller than most homeowners expect. Even 1-inch hail, about the size of a quarter, can damage your shingles.

Much of that damage is hard to spot. Hail can bruise a shingle, meaning it weakens the layers underneath while the surface still looks fine.

It can also knock off granules. Those are the small, gritty pieces coating your shingles that protect them from sun and water.

You won't see either problem from the street. Over time, bruised shingles break down and bare spots let water in. That's how one storm can turn into a leak months later.

You don't need to climb on the roof to check. We don't recommend it. Start with these three ground-level signs:

1. Dented gutters or downspouts. Look for dings in the metal after a storm.
2. Granules in your downspouts. Check for dark, sand-like grit collecting where the water drains out.
3. Damaged window screens. Small dents or tears can point to hail impact.

If hail marked these surfaces, your roof may have taken a hit as well.

A circle shows where to look closer. We explain what each marked shingle means before anyone calls the damage minor.

Patching circles one by one misses the slope and the valley, where two slopes meet and water runs hardest.
