AGING GRACEFULLY

With another birthday following too quickly on the heels of last year's celebration, I am reminded of the precious, yet fleeting, beauty of each passing day. One of my frequent prayers is that I may grow more lovely in spirit, more gracious in outlook, as I age. To that end, I am inspired by this elderly Japanese Maple--still vibrant, still stretching heavenward, still gracing those within its sphere of influence--despite its 270+ year-old history.

FALL IS FOR . . . FERTILIZING?

Most people fertilize their lawns in the spring, but did you know that fall is actually the best time to perform this task? Fall fertilization will help your lawn recover from summer stress and prepare for next year's growth. According to researchers and turf grass practitioners. "the application of nitrogen fertilizers in late fall results in lawns that are visibly greener in color through the summer of the following year . . . . " (http://www.greenviewfertilizer/com)

Applying nitrogen fertilizer to lawns during the months of September through December--while the grass is still green and growing--provides several benefits not realized by spring and summer fertilization:
1. Better fall and winter color;
2. Earlier spring green-up;
3. Increased shoot density;
4. Improved fall, winter, and spring root growth;
5 Enhanced storage of energy reserves within the turf.

Researchers and turf grass experts find these advantages far outweigh any disadvantages (snow mold injury and decreased cold tolerance) and heartily recommend applying nitrogen fertilization to lawns in the fall.

FALL IS FOR PLANTING . . . WILDFLOWERS?

You have no doubt heard that fall is a good time for planting trees, shrubs, and spring bulbs, since the weather is cooler (less stressful for plants--and planter!) and the ground is still warm enough for root development. But did you know that fall is also a great season for planting wildflowers, even in areas with cold, snowy winters?

The advantage of planting wildflowers in the fall is that you will see blooms earlier than if you wait to plant in the spring. The seeds will lie dormant during the winter and will begin to germinate in the spring, when the ground begins to warm up.

A number of our clients are enthralled with wildflowers and take joy in looking across their own personal wildflower meadows. If you like the thought of experiencing this delight on your own property, this is a great time to bring this vision into your own view with a call: 717-653-1273.
